Subject: Any good products for in between washes?

Hi - I have recently started washing my hair every 2 the 3 days because of the dry climate I live in.  I was wondering if there are any good products out there that I can use between washes?  Something that I might be able to spay and leave in the roots to keep from getting oily.

TIA!

I haven't heard of anything that will do that...one thing you may consider, if your hair is getting oily but you want to go longer between washes because of dry skin - is washing every other day but using diluted shampoo.  This was suggested by Dave, the admin of the long hair board.  It works really well because diluted shampoo doesn't remove too much oil so your scalp doesn't get as dry, but your hair still gets clean.  You can dilute any amount you want up to 75% water.  I use about 50/50 shampoo to water and I still get a good lather when I wash it, but have less dry skin problems.

Welcome J-Katt!  I don't know that there exists a product which keeps your roots from getting oily.  But Susan has an excellent suggestion which may work for you.

Thank you Susan for the kind mention. The "magic" of dilution works in even slimmer proportions - I've lately been using about 10:1 (water:shampoo) with excellent results.

Thank you Susan for your suggestion.  I will definately try that.

I remember seeing and advertisement for a product for between washes and I finally remembered it is by Aveda.  It is Light Elements Reviving Mist.  You spray your hair with it between washes to remoisturize.  If anyone else is interested you can read about it here:

Please post if anyone has tried this product.

Thanks!

Hi J-Katt,

a general rule to prevent oily hair (which you can follow too) is rinse as cold as possible and not massage the scalp too hard.  Warm rinses and scalp massages increase the 'oil production'.  Diluting shampoo is what normally all stylists do (about 50/50) before applying on the head, otherwise the cleaning agents could irritate locally.

Dave, sure am going to try the 10:1 personally.  Wouldn't be surprised if it works because most hair is not that greasy or dirty these days anymore; certainly if products (like gel/wax/hairspray/...) aren't used.

If you don't want to dry out your skin, but want to wash your hair, you could stand outside the shower and lean in and wash only your hair.

My grandmother used to use some sort of dry powder on her hair (I think) in between visits to the hairstylists (why would anybody want to wait 1-2 weeks in between hair washings?).

That's a good point, HD_EU, which I failed to mention.  I don't use any of the listed products (gel, wax, or hairspray).  If I did, I would imagine a stronger concentration of shampoo (than I use) would be necessary.

Hello J-Katt

I also go a couple days without washing or rinsing. My roots can tend to get a little greasy looking, so if this happens I use Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder to freshen. Not only does it take the greasy look away, it gives AMAZING volume. It will make roots feel a little "gritty" but it is worth it. It comes in different colors (black, brown, red, white) so it can actually help mask roots a little if you color you hair, which is another reason I use it since I am a bottle blonde! I believe they tout it as a "dry shampoo." I have also used baby powder (though some say corn starch also works) sprinkled very lightly across the greasy spots, then flip your head upside down and fluff with your fingers or use a wide tooth comb just at the root. This will also work if you have accidently used too much product.
