Hi! I'm brand-new here. I've been searching for some good hair care sites.

A little about my hair: I colored it blonde (from light brown) for about 16 or 17 years. Then I decided to grow the color out and it took almost 3 years. I kept cutting little bits of the old color out. I had it in a very blunt cut. A couple months ago and I got the last few inches of processed part off, but it was still a blunt cut.

Recently I decided I felt like a little "style" that would grow out nicely as well so now I have a long shag (long layers), with the longest part falling past my shoulder line. My hair is very fine and it's usually straight but with the layers, it's slightly wavy.

Anyway, I moved from the east coast to the west coast last month and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, BAM, dry hair is back!!! I am so disappointed because my hair was finally starting to feel like "real" hair (without the processed parts making it feel dry). I'm afraid to overcondition though, because of how fine my hair is. Does anybody live in a dry climate and how do you deal with hair dryness? Are there any particular products that help?

Thanks so much and it's nice to meet you all!

You might want to try jojoba oil.  You only need a drop or two for your length of hair, and it will help keep your hair moisturized (and the act of putting it on helps your hands stay moisturized too!).  It is good for hair, unlike products that may cause damage over time.  It weighs hair down a little, but makes it look shinier too.  You only use it from the ears down, and it should not make your hair look oily or wet, or get on your clothes (if it does any of these things, it just means you used way too much).

Thanks so very much for the reply, Susan. I used to use jojoba oil but I hadn't even thought of it this time around. I used it when my hair was pretty long (bra strap length) because the hair there was "old" (my hair takes a long time to grow...at that length, the ends were close to three years old). I hadn't thought of trying it on shorter hair. I'm gonna run to the health food store post-haste...thanks!

Greetings, Mels, and welcome to the HairBoutique hair talk forums!

In addition to Susan's excellent suggestion, you might also want to consider is getting a plastic bottle with a mister and mist your hair just a bit when it's feeling dry.
