aka Japanese Straightening ~ Hi! I have always wanted straight hair, and flat iron everyday. I plan on getting straight extensions, and was wondering if it makes sense to Japenese straighten my hair before extensions... or should I just continue to flat iron the peices on top? If I did get it straightened, would my hair be able to tolerate both the stress of the chemicals and extensions? Or am I asking for trouble? Thanks! |

If your hair is in decent shape, it should be able to withstand both the extensions and the chemical straightening. I also do a lot of thermal reconditioning, a have a few extension clients who get that treatment, and all it well with them. Now you're right, it may not be necessary to chemically straighten your hair if it's going to be covered up with extensions anyway. I guess it depends on how curly your hair is. Well.. it used to be a lot curlier... but now it's more wavy/curly/frizzy when not blown out and flat ironed. It's definitely more relaxed than it used to be, that's for sure! I guess it's just hard for me to picture how it's going to be... how hard it will be to straighten... if my hair will get weighed down by the extenstions, and natrually relax... etc. Thanks again Metalgirl! |

Metalgirl, Do you still think this is safe if she's just colored her hair? Hippyhair: Did you lift/bleach you hair, or color it darker? :) |

Hey Jenny girl! I only ever darken (semi-permanent colour usually) my hair. I have only once had very simple hilighting... and that was about 7 months ago (hated it).... and now it is all covered by my most recent DARK colour. But I have always been a brunette. Thanks! |

| Before you decide on thermal reconditioning, you should read about it on the straight hair board. The chi method is the one that seems to give the most trouble. Some women have had horrible experiences, i.e. their hair just broke off within weeks. It's definitely something that you want to speak to satisfied customers about, don't just lay down all that money. |

just iron it :)
thats what i do and it only takes an extra few minutes... just do big chunkson the underneath just to flatten it out a bit, and do the parting area as normal and it will be fine :) |

My girl friend got her hair thermal straightened and man was it beautiful! She has super thick, naturally curly hair and it came out like perfectly straight, soft, like commercial pantene hair!

| I'll admit, chemically-straightened hair is darn convenient. I used One 'n' Only Curl Remover (the one designed for hilighted hair), and I loved it. It doesn't make your hair stick straight, but it relaxes the curl (mine went from a loose, uneven wave to pretty darn straight). It also cut down the poof and frizzies. I think it's less harsh than some of the thermal straighteners, although I don't have much knowledge on that. |

| I have had my hair straightened that way and it was fine. If they know what they are doing it shoudn't weaken the hair much at all. Other chemical straighteners are different (old school Lye methods) those break down the hair much more and you would be likely to have more breakage with that type of technique. |

I have use the CHI method for about 2 years and have done about 70 heads with that method, and it always turns out with very good results. In a few clients (like 1 or 2) there may have been a single small spot with breakage, but very minimal and they were thrilled with the overall result anyway. I tried the Yuko system a few times and I hated it, it was very unpredictable. As with any chemical, it's only as good as the person applying it. I do frequent strand tests to make sure I don't over process.
