I recently moved from the east coast to California and I can not believe the intensity of the sun here! I love where I live now but today I looked in the mirror and realized the sun seems to be bleaching my hair out. It's gone from light brown to very very light brown/blondish. It's pretty noticeable. The hair feels fine (soft...unprocessed) but I'm worried that the sun will damage my hair. I have a UV-protectant leave-in and I like it but my hair is very fine and it seems to weigh it down. I figure UV shampoo is useless since you wash it out, and UV conditioner only goes on the ends so the top is still getting doused in sun. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can prevent dryness/damage?

My hair does the same thing in the sun.  I wouldn't say my hair looks much more damaged for it, but when you feel the top of your head and it's SO hot you have to wonder!  I know some people who burn put sun lotion on their part (not for the hair), but other than wearing it up a lot so different parts of it get the sun, or wearing it under hats or scarves I'm not sure what else you can do.

Thanks Susan! I think I'll buy a cool hat and start wearing it.

Hello-

I am a natural level 6, but color my hair to a level 9 beige blonde, although my ends are probably a 10. I was recently in St. Thomas and worried about the sun bleaching out my freshly colored hair. I had purchased Frederic Fekia (spelled wrong?) spray-in sun protectant and it worked wonders. It smells nice, and it even kept the Caribbean sun from bleaching out my hair, so it should work just fine for your California sun. It can be purchased at Sephora and professional salons, it is fairly expensive (around $20) but worth it. It has a nice smell and lots of conditioners in it too. BTW, a lot of hair products also contain sunscreen even though they may not say on the front, check the ingredient list to be sure.
