Hey everyone,

I have been browsing the boards for a while and finally thought I should get involved.  I'm a university student with type 4b relaxed hair.  My mother always used to take care of my hair, up until I was around 15 or 16 years old and it was perfectly healthy and shiny.  I've found that over the past few years with less and less time to spend on my hair due to school work, the health of my hair has just gone down the drain and I really want to get it back into health.

My problem is I find that after the first wash when I relax my hair, it seems like it was never relaxed at all.  The shine is gone and gets dry and dull looking until the next relaxer.  I have a few friends who have the same problem, and they're solution is to stretch out shampoos.  I can't do that because I can't stand when I have an itchy scalp.  It has gotten to the point where I want to relax sooner just so I can get that shiny look again.  I currently relax about every 7 or 8 weeks (I know that isn't very long).

Are there any tips on what to do after washing to keep my hair from looking dull between relaxers?

Hi Moni-Q,

I would suggest using a moisturizing shampoo followed with a hot oil treatment and a leave in conditioner.  Also, what are you using to moisturize after you have washed and dried your hair?

Deep condition your hair. I used Redken Heavy Cream for the first time last night and I can't believe my hair. It has a lot of sheen and it's so so soft. It's so detangled too (my hair has been tangling a lot lately). Also i hardly have any frizz.

I agree with everone here.  Deep conditioning is key to any relaxer treatment.  I use Queen Helen Cholesterol or Hollywood's Carrot Cholesterol.

Also, for the frizzies and shine, Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Aloe Enriched is really good.

My hair is relaxed but I'm sure it would work good on natural hair.

Gurl that's not a stupid questions at all.   Yes, moisturzing shampoos can have protein in them. Conditioning shampoo. like
Moisturizing shampoos, are formulated for dry, damaged, & chemically treated hair. Nourishing proteins and vitamins infuse moisture and protein that help to strengthen the hair.

For example Kenra's moisturizing shampoo has wheat protein.
