Hi Everyone...

ive just joined up so i thought id introduce myself :

my name is asmara, & i am living in the U.K.  

i love anything to do with creativity - drawing, painting, making my own jewellery & clothes, writing & prose poetry.

im currently working as a henna tattooist to help see me thru uni fees (& lovin it!) , where im studying pyschology & HCI.

I have very long hair (just below my bum!) which is dark brown.

Ive always had long hair, mostly because of my fear towards hairdressers! (had a horrible experience when younger which put me off for life! made the mistake of opting for a perm on waist length hair and ended up coming out of the salon looking like i had something that resembled very short fuzzy frizz pubic hair, for my supposedly newlook long hair doo! )...however, im seriously considering to go and get it cut & maybe coloured professionally (my partner usually trims it for me.) i want to keep it as long as possible and add some kind of shape to the front, long layers or something. (i dont feel i could ever go short after having it this long, for so long!

I dont really have any idea what the style i want is called, ive seen it on many people with long hair irl, but for some reason not on online, or in any hair magazines!-  that is one of the reasons i decided to join this friendly forum. hopefully one of you can help, or maybe suggest something, or share some pics of hairstyles/cuts for longer hair...as well as reassure me, hairdressers arent all bad!

ohhh....ive tried lots of different styles, but i never feel "right" wearing it right back off my face. - braids, ponytails, plaits, all up, wavy after wearing it in braids for the whole night, etc...

i do cringe at the thought of having it cut, due to me being very attached to my hair (i feel its my protection - if that makes any sense to you..!) but lots of people are suggesting i get it cut into some style...a few strands shorter at the front, as at the mo, it is all one length (which is nice, but apparently it looks, um..."boring").....so im like...considering it.

if i dont go for it, i might just have it trimmed so the length is kissing my spine again...but i dunno....i just dunnoooh!

p.s. the quality of the photo is very bad due to me not using my digicam (i broke it) and having to use a shoddy webcam,  ...but, heres a pic of my hair at its present length when its slightly wavy (due to having it in loose plaits) i'll post some better ones from the back, etc... when i get another decent cam!

thanks for your input, and the very nice compliment dave ...(i have to say, if that is you in your user icon pic dave, im in complete AWE @ your mane - just how long did it take to grow THAT long?!?)

im nervous enough about letting my partner trim it, so god knows how id feel in a hairdressers chair asking them to cut the strands shorter at the front and front ONLY (ive read a few posts upon the board where hairdressers tend to get scissor happy on long hair)...im really not to sure what to do at the moment. but what you say, i know is the right advice - i should only get it cut if i want it cut...not because people suggest it would suit me better and be a more "fun" style to have.

ive never really found fashionable cuts/styles and all that hair product stuff you have to use in order to keep it in shape attractive, and have always found the natural long mane much more appealing & in synch with my soul, but when the majority of family & friends keep on telling me to get it chopped, i cant help but question its length.

id also like to say that the picture you have attatched to your message is absolutely stunning. is that your hair? if so, what method of styling do you use to make it look so beautiful? (i think i can see little plaits? as well as zigzaggy type of waves?) -

now if i could do such things to my hair, i wouldnt even be considering on getting it cut!

first of all, asmara, welcome to the board.  your hair is gorgeous.

like the others said- make sure it's what you really want before you cut it.  i've been in that situation and ended up cutting my hair really short, and i still regret it.

as you know, the ones you most love giving you their opinions on what would be better for you when it comes to style, etc, is a horrible situation to be in, espec when you have always valued their view. this is why im so confudgelated on what to do!

im sorry to hear you were also put in that position. i really feel for you where you felt regrets about having your hair cut. i do see tho, from your flowery chart (if its your chart that is!) that your hair is only 9 months away from it being waist length! so congrats on the wonderful growth katja!

i also clicked on the link to your piccy...so im now able to return your compliment - your hair too, is beautiful. its looks so strong and lushiously thick!...i also brightend the pic a bit (i couldnt see it properly ya see due to my monitor settings! - hope you dont mind!) when i lightend the pic, it let me see all the wonderful colours of your hair tones. you have a few strands that are the colour of caramel, which is so capturing! & if hair was edible, well, id eat yours

but yes,  i can imagine it all free flowing when youre doing your gymnastics, bet it looks wild. and, so pretty when you have to wear it in a bun in order to not do roly polys on it...heheh

awww, thanks so much!  i've never been told my hair looked good enough to eat before haha  ...yeah i don't know why the picture's so dark.  i lightened it up a lot before i uploaded it but for some reason it didn't seem to upload the edited version.

anyway, thanks again for the compliments!  and i'm glad to hear you've decided to keep your hair the way it is.  it's too long & pretty to cut

now if i could do such things to my hair, i wouldnt even be considering on getting it cut!

I just had to chime in and tell you how beautiful both you and your hair are!  What you said made me wonder if maybe you would enjoy your hair more if you had more style ideas?  Have you seen http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com - www.dreamweaverbraiding.com ?  On their menu on the left they have braiding instructions and examples if you don't already know how to do those, and you can get tons of waves if you braid your hair in small braids when it's damp and sleep in it.   I would definitely ignore anyone who told me to cut such beautiful hair!

i know how to french braid, from an early age i taught myself how to do that.... but anything beyond that, i end up with aching arms and a mess when it comes to a DIY job. and sadly, none of my friends can braid

i gotta say, i do love the the longhair knot braid...and i have tried to do the eowyn style, but my hair slips out of it. i also love rosestem...not to sure about perimeter braid tho, reminds me of a loaf of bread i seen at the bakers this morning!

and yeah...theres one braid on it i dont like tho. it looks like a loaf of fancy bread i saw in a bakery stuck to the back of a head. the rest are amazing tho!

i think im gonna get my hair done in tiny tiny little bo dereck braids very very soon...to keep me cool for when i go on holidayyy.

ive never seen a man with such beautiful long hair before and im very intrigued by how different the texture would be from a womans hair (if there is a diff that is?!?!)
