I'm thinking of trying pinchbraids, but is there a thermofiber that's 40"? I can't use monofiber because I have to flat iron my natural hair. Also, just out of curiosity, will any monofiber melt to heat seal or do you have to use a specific brand?

American Dream is the only therm I know that comes that long; I believe it's available up to 60 inches.
I'm still not sure if you can use thermofiber for heat-seals. I think a
few members were conducting experiments, but I'm not sure what the
findings were. You can use anything, obviously, with pinchbraids though.

FinaFina says that her girl can use *any* hair and do heat seals, even human hair. So I imagine for someone who knows how to do what ever her technique is, it could be done with themal too.

Oh yeah, you can do heat-seals even with human hair, but they take bits
of synth and incorporate it into the braids to form the loop. I just
don't know if therm itself would seal in on itself, but if not, you
could incorporate bits of monofiber to do the job. :)

You have to go higher than 356/180 F/C to make the therm heat seal on
itself. Show me a tool that will get me that hot and I will march
right out and try it....

that scares me
I think I'm going to plead sleep deprivation til I revisit this sometime tomorrow.
And I'm not sure I'd want to do a heat seal with a flat iron. How
big is that? more than an inch wide and that could be really scary

all different sizes, I think the smallest is 3/4", so that's not too big. They're around $100+ bucks tho.

Dome's C2 braid sealer is insanely expesinve IMHO. And I just
invested in Docs heat clamp. And I'ma DIY so why am I so prone to
buying all these industrial tools that will never get enough mileage to
justify their proce and....
Crap that's what i get for opening my damn mouth when I've been working
18 hours a day 7 days a week for 3 weeks. Stupid @#$% just spews
forth.
Seriously though. How hot does the average straightening iron
get? I have one. But I haven't tried it for heat sealing...

I use my braid sealer (Hot Tools, $26ish from ebonyline.com) for
heat-seals, and I know Boogiemama did too at one point. And no, you
don't have to use a specific monofiber; Dome, Trimco, Prostyles, and
Plastikhaar all work.
Bird, you may not need to use thermofiber- I can use a curling iron on
synth with no problem, and I've been able to use a flot-iron on plain
old kanekalon silky braid, so it may not be an issue. Perhaps order (or
trade for!) a small amount of monofiber and put in a few test streaks
to see how they react to your flat iron.

But doesn't that braid sealer cut off the hair as it seals? Like trimming the bottom of the braid as it seals it? That would defeat the entire purpose of a heat sealed loose extension! I was looking into those braid sealers when I was delusional that I could possibly do them myself, and it seemed like those things cut as well as seal.

I too thought braid sealers also cut the ends. Otherwise I probably would have gotten one rather than DOcs clamp

They do, if you use them the way you're supposed to. As you cans ee here: http://store.ebonyline.com/50022.html
There's a little cone-shaped indent, and that's the spot where the
braid would go normally. But right in front of it, there's a little
flat spot where two parts of the hot section meet; that's the spot I
use. You've got to clamp it once from one angle, then rotate it a
little and clamp it at another angle, but it works.
Though mocha, don't regret buying Doc's clamp...I'm actually
considering getting one, since I think it would give better control
(the action on the braid sealer is a little loose) and the braid sealer
gets a little too hot for my taste- you have to clamp on really fast,
and then let go really fast, r the hair melts through. So the variable
temp on Doc's wand would help, I think.
I'd really like to know what Boogiemama uses these days, now that Doc carries the heat clamps as well as the braid sealers.
