How long does your natural hair have to be to get extensions?  I have always had long hair and lost it from chemo. It is approx 1 1/2 inches long right now, but i am dying for it to be long enough to get extensions so i can have "me" hair again. So about how long does my hair have to be before i can get them done? chin length? longer, shorter?  TIA

It really depends on the method of extensions, but I would say that most extensionists want the hair to be at least 4 inches in length.  The shorter the natural hair, the harder to conceal the extensions.

In really short hair, I feel that wefted methods create a smoother look and blend better then strand methods.  The hardest thing from the extensionists point of view is how to avoid that imfamous 'mullet' look when the natural hair is really short.

two inches is usually the shortest to start, and to not get the mullet look, which is hard, i layer all the way from top to ends this way it looks like a blended cut.

You might be able to get something going with 1 1/2" if you don't mind announcing to the world "Hey I have extensions!"   I think Kalika's hair was that short when she did her install of shrinkies.  But she just let the bonds show and didn't worry.

That allowed her to go all the way up her head witht he extension hair.  Therefore no mullet.

Honestly i dont mind if you can tell they are extensions, i just want long hair again. I live in south florida, so i assume there are a lot of good places I can go down here.

Hi sugar, if your hair isn't long/strong enough for extensions, check out some wigs.  They have a lot of really natural looking wigs out there!  Good luck!

I actually have a few really nice wigs. I have been wearing them since my hair fell out though (october) and i am so sick of them. I am getting little sores around my head from them as well. I have actually never left the house with my short hair showing.

You could also do visible open-ended braids or pinchbraids, which totally eliminates the mullet effect but again, it'll be obvious you have extensions. I like them personally:
