I know that either sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate is an ingredient added to cheaper shampoos to make it lather, and it is generally to be avoided. However, I can't remember which one is the bad one! Also, when reading labels, instead of sodium lauryl/laureth, I've seen ammonium lauryl/laureth sulfate. Does anyone know if the ammonium is basically the same type of chemical, or is it better/worse for your hair? |

That's funny, I was searching for the same answers. I researched this and sodium lauryl sulfate, TEA-lauryl sulfate, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, and TEA-dodecylbenzene are drying and potentially irritating to the scalp than other ingredients. Sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate are common detergent cleansing agents used in almost every shampoo being sold. They are more gentle than the ingredients listed in my above paragraph.

I thought it went like this from most harsh to least: Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate Ammonium Laureth Sulfate Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Sodium Laureth Sulfate I only use Sodium Laureth unless it's a clarifying shampoo then I will use Sodium Lauryl. I agree with Layla's list. SLS is too harsh for my hair. I use Avalon, which doesn't have sulfates. Also if you want to lessen the effect of the drying sulfates, try diluting your shampoo 50/50 or more with water. Shampoo comes pretty concentrated, so it still makes a good lather and is much less drying for the scalp (you may even find, as I did, that your hair gets oily a day later). ------------- Making metal barettes/concord clips hair safe, long hair style how to: http://alonghair.wordpress.com |
