Hello,
I wanted to thank everyone on this board I have been reading for a
while now and learning a lot. I have very, very fine, very dark
hair which is rapidly going gray. I hate the hair dyes and all the
chemicals in them aggraviate my scalp and quite frankly sometimes even
make me ill, and I hate that after just one week my gray is
noticably showing back up. I was told I needed to 'lighten' my hair and
the gray would be less noticable.... Big mistake. Just about ruined my
hair.
My daughter found out about hair extension, and she was interested in
it, ( she is Goth and has absolutely beautiful hair and very long but
she wants to add color and some texture, but did not want to put
anything on it that may mess up her hair which is also fine as well not
as fine as my but still fairly fine. So she has opted on trying the
linkies, and thought extension might also be a solution for my problem
also, and after looking at the pictures here I was hooked. Even though
my hair is long and has been most of my life as I said it is very fine,
like baby fine, here is my chance to have long lush wavy locks
something I thought I would never have because since my hair is so fine
even body waves and perms were a washout since I experienced so much
breakage and frizziness with them not to mention one of them even gave
me such a rash on my scalp and around my hair line, I was miserable for
a week. Yep the beautician tried a few different types, different
rollers, less time etc... Nothing worked.
Anyways I rambling, I ordered my PH hair last night ( I do not like the
idea of wearing someone elses hair just does not set right with
me....like wearing someone elses undergarments.....yuk) And of
course I did not write down everything before ordering and accidently
ordered the 28 mm rather than the 50 mm. I emailed them and asked if
they would change that for me.... She emailed me right back and said
yes.... Awesome.....I have not recieved the hair yet of course but I
have got to give a big thumbs up on the customer service !
I ordered the Shrinkes from Shrinknet screwed up that order also got
clear instead of black.... I emailed her I have not heard back I am
hoping she will ship the black instead of the clear.
Also I got the liquid gold, the heat clamp and the linkies kit from
hair candy... But after reading last night about how the LG bonds to
your hair and can cause hair loss I may try a basic craft glue like
Sobo (same as Tacky Glue I used to do leather crafts and used both
Aileens and Sobo, like the sobo better, more flex to it, and does not
dry 'shiny' but not sure how heat resistant it will be) also I
really hate chemicals so want to try to find something that is less
toxic than I think that the LG may be. I have so many senativities to
chemicals... so I might have some LG up for trade here in a few days.
What about bees, or soem type of vegtable based wax? I have seen some
people talking about the tips having wax in them... what if I warmed up
some bees wax and dipped the PH hair in it worked it through the PH
really well and then rolled the ends up? How would the wax react with
the hair both mine and the PH ? Anyone know?
I could probably even add some hosetail herb (nartural silicia) to the
wax which would 'bond' with and protect the natural hair. Not sure
about how it would hold in the shrinkie or on the PH hair though.
Once again thank you so much for all the info you all share on this
site.... I would have never been able to undertake such a task without
all the wonderful info I found on this board. I will come back
and post some before and after photos once I get all the supplies and
get it done.
I am going to work on trying to come up with an alternative to the fabric softner(chloroform, benzyl acetate, pentane).
I make all natural(organic) non toxic health and beauty products so I
am going to see what I can blend up with out all the nasty stuff in it
and that will work just as well if not better... Any suggestions for
ingredients for it would be greatly appreciated, since at this point I
am clueless about the PH hair and what it is in the fabric softner that
makes it work on it.

I dont think wax would be a good idea, I can imagine a lot of hair shedding after the first wash.
ever thought of a demi permanant vegtable hair dye? You say your hair's black and there are a bajillion types of dye on the market, that may be something you can try that wont make you feel gross. Or even black henna? My mother dyed her hair red for years with henna.

Hello Kalika,
Yes tried the henna, and I liked it, but it did not last long, I have
also tired the semi permant colors and same thing, Within a week or two
I have like a 1/4 inch of gray showing at the top, I know my hair
is not growing that fast so I am thinking the color does not hold on
the gray as well?

not semi permanant, DEMI permanant. semi permanant gradually washes out and demi permanant only deposits color, not lifts and deposits like permanant colors.
(edit) but yes, some people just have very hard to color grey. they make dyes for that, but its probably harsher then you'd like.

Kalika ,
demi permanent sorry, I have not heard of that.... thank you I will
look into that.... it only happens at the roots, the gray on the ends
hold the color but not at the roots? I am clueless.... I gave up going
to the beauty salon a while ago they want to charge me so much to do
anything with my hair because of the length, and most of the ladies get
frustrated trying to do anything with it since it does not want to stay
in the rollers etc... and of course since it is so thin the ends are
always so ratty they want to lop off about two inches...which quite
frankly it normally needs I just hate getting it cut. :(
Amm thank you so much.... you rock.... love working with a company that provides such excellent customer service !

It may be oil on the scalp making it not take well at the root. Try washing frist with a good clensing shampoo and no conditioner on.

i know you say your sensitive but a trick we use sometimes to help get the "hard to color" grey hair, is to Pre soften the roots,
take a cotton ball, dip it into 20 vol developer and dab it on all your roots, before you color your hair-if its just your part and hair line your worried about then just do that, i would also reccommend using permanent color to get it to stay, that is probably the only thing that would penetrate enough without fading so quick. if your senstive, again, why not just do your part and hairline with the permanent and the rest with semi permanent color. only do the pre softener if you are going to use permanent color.
sounds like your hair grows fast and regrowth espicially grey shows oh so fast!

Falcon, I have similar hair: very fine and dark. May I suggest a very inexpensive, water-mixed color to cover gray: first is a Japanese color called BIGEN - Sally's carries it. It's got no hair color chems whatsoever, and it will cover gray like nobody's business. It's made to cover gray in Asian hair so go figure. BIGEN gets a bit too black for me so I use WATERWORKS - also carried by Sally's and right next to bigen on the shelf - but Waterwork's colors don't go so black, and they fade gradually into highlights - I like it the best. $4.99 a box. Neither of these is henna based, are peroxide and ammonia free, and are long lasting. You'll be surprised. Great products for dark hair.
As far as pretips go, using a water-based glue is counter-intuitive...washing will dissolve the glue over time. LG is a pain, so why not go with a keratin stick and glue gun to pretip? Waxy glues disintigrate with washing, and conditioner will remove a wax-based glue very quickly. Keratin lasts longer. Haircandy.net sells good keratin sticks.
Shrinkies: shrinkie.net is the way to go. Amm's got your back on the black ones. You're dialed in.
Synthetic hair: fabric softener works on synth the way it does on clothes...remember, synthetic hair is, in fact, synthetic - like nylon or polyester. So what works on synth fabric works great on the hair. Go figure!
Be sure to read the updates from the girls using PH: Jenny, amm, Cheryl (ccross...i forget), FinaFina, Merguthrie...that way you'll know what to expect with synth.
Good luck! Remember the requirement: you MUST post pictures!

Thank you so much ladies for the info,
When you say sally's you mean Sally's beauty supplies, we have one here
I will check next week and see if the have it in stock at this
store. I want to try to go a bit lighter than my natural color,
so I will probably try the waterworks, as much gray as I have now about
50% it should pick up the color pretty good, and 'brighten' my natural
color I hope.
As to the oils in you hair I think that may be part of the problem, my
hair and skin are oily .... I do not put conditioner on my hair since
it weighs it down so much I have a 'leave in' I make up that I spray on
the ends only. But I use a very gentle shampoo so it does not
'pull' all the oils out of my hair either. I may have to use a
different shampoo before dying.
Thanks for the info on the keratin glue, I wish I could afford it, but
I have pretty much spent all I had to spend on this project it will
have to wait until next time... I was trying to figure out what I had
around the house here I could do it with, and since wax will not work I
guess I will just have to go ahead and use the LG and keep my fingers
crossed.
I will post pics of both my hair before and after and my daughters.

Oh and yes,
I just wanted to say I was a bit wary about ordering all this stuff on
line, and of course was not paying as close attention as I should have
been when ordering and screwed it up.... Amm and Sara at PH were
absolutely great..... they did not give me the least bit of problem
about changing my order and were very nice and polite.... not to often
you have the chance to deal with companies that care that much about
thier customers ! I would highly recommend them both !

I use LG. Well recently. I had no trouble with it sticking
to my hair when I did my shrinkie take down on Monday. I did
cover most of the tips with nail glue. But not all.
you can always get cheap latex glue at Sally's for pretipping (99c).
I'm constantly trying to solve the gray covereage issue myself. I
use Loving care. its a temporary color fromt eh
supermarket. I used to use some other stuff but I'm trying to
give my head a rest from chemical onslaught.
I believe the logic of why the fabric softener works so well on PH is
the same as why it works so well on synthetic fiber clothes. YOu
wouldn't put oil based conditioner on PH like you would your natural
hair cause it just doesn't mesh with the synthetic. I'm sure PH
is a highly hydrophobic fiber molecule as well. As I'm sure you
know from making the beuaty products the rule is 'like likes
like.' I suspect that natural alternatives will be
difficult to find. But please share with us you trials.
Also TCE is some great stuff for keeping the LG thin enought o work with when it starts getting stringy on you.
