Well, you could just put the sun in on the roots only (squirt it on a paintbrush or q tip or even your finger to spread it on), but that stuff is really terrible for your hair.  If you want to go lighter you'll get much better and healthier results from a real dye / salon.

If your hair is brown, it will turn it orangy, not blond. Regular hair dyes and bleaches are much more gentle than Sun-in, a product designed for people who want to claim they don't color their hair.

My hair is dark blonde/light brown

I have dark blonde/light brown hair. I have used Sun-In for the last few years, since money was too tight for professional highlights. Based upon my experience, I say STAY AWAY FROM SUN-IN.

It is extremely damaging to one's hair and will cause breakage with extended use. Applying it to the roots only is very difficult, and you will have to do it repeatedly to get the right results. Using it repeatedly and you will end up with ends that are almost white, while the top of the hair will be a darker blonde and too brassy.

The highlighting gel made by Sun-in is far better than the spray stuff. It has mineral oil and is rather gentle. However, you still have to apply it repeatedly to get the right results.

I suggest you go to a beauty supply store and look into some of the products there, personally, I like L'Oreal's Mega Blonde line. It is more gentle on your hair, and easier to apply, especially when you are at the point that you only need to touch up the roots.

Using Sun-In ruined my hair and I would never use it again.
