I played about with some pinch braids today (put 4 in around my fringe) btu i cant figure out how you get decently long hair with them?

Most extensions seem to only be about 20" long

if you have to fold the extension in half then you are going to end up with only 10" then you have to trim the ends

I cant see anywehre selling extensions longer than 24"

am I missing something or is pinch braiding only useful for short extensions?

You have to fold it over just enough to make the length of the braided part. Usually 1-2" or so. The smaller the braid, the less length you need to fold over to make it secure.

isnt that going to mean the braids are quite thick in comparison to the amount of hair coming out the end?

still, i'll give that a go :)
