I was curious if those who wear extensions and had experienced damage.... Well have you had a hairdresser tsk-tsk you? I ask because my sister is a hairdresser. When I was a newbie, I put in a batch of dreads incorrectly (live and learn) my hairline is now thin. I used rubber bands to anchor them so the damage is pretty obvious!I want to keep wearing extensions now that I have learned so much, from this board and quinns. She lectures me that if I continue with extensions I will keep ruining my natural hair and eventually have nothing to work with! It is just disturbing to me and my self esteem has dropped as now I feel I have screwed up my hair..... I would like to hear suggestions and opinions. |

will there be some damage always. probably. will it be so
much that you will have 'nothing left to work with.' not if you are
careful and figure out the right method for you. SOme people use extensions as coverup while they grow their own hair out. clearly they aren't doing the kind of damage your sister is talking about. Plus if you are the kind of person who installed dreads you probably would feel comfortable with some of the very obviously extensions, very easy on your hair methods. Didn't you install openended braids somewhat recently? I think braids are great for you hair. the ends are all wrapped up and protected. (well it depends on how much you braid and how long your hair is with openenders). You don't have to wash as often, which lets all your natural scalp goodness spread around. And as long as you don't use way to much hair you don't have to worry about rippin gyour hair out. No glue. Therefore no weird remover chemicals. Your sister is right that unresearched, and unedicated you can really doa world of damage to your head. but as you already said now you have us and quinns board. :)al She's probably just jealous |

Anything that uses your growing hair as an anchor will cause some degree of damage,. The key is to minimize the potential damage by using the gentler methods (no glue), and do it properly. Thinning hair will no doubt occur over time if the extensions are too heavy compared to the hair they are attached too. For example, if your hair is fine, you cannot add the same amount of hair as someone who has naturally thick hair. The damage may not be noticed right away, but over time the follicles get stressed to the point that they no longer produce hair. this sounds like what may have happened with your dreads. I think your sister's comment is maybe a little extreme, just be smart and realistic about how you do your extensions and you should be fine! |

| if i go to a crappy slaon, they tend to talk sh*t about my hair. it's thin an dfine and there's nothing i can do to change it. i don't see how they think it's goodf or business to act liek that. |

| shadow, dont let it get you down! i went to a hairdresser like a year ago and i have babyfine hair and when i dont get it trimmed regularly it looks like CRAP, but once its trimmed it looks alright. Well anyway this lady lectured me about dying my hair the whole time i was there, about how it needed to be cut and styled regularly and all this crap, made me very uncomfortable. so when i left shes like be sure to make another appointment with me! yah right lady.. the point is its your hair and sometimes you just cant help the condition its in, if its babyfine etc. and the fact that you damaged your hair incorrectly doing dreads is your problem not your sisters. she probably feels she has the right to do this because she is your sister and she doesnt want you damaging your hair again but hey sometimes our creativity outweighs that risk. i would just suggest going to another hairdresser to make things easier for you. |

No, but I've been to salons where everyone swarmed and screeched positive reviews like banshees whenever someone got a cut or color.

| Nah...you just haven't found the right stylist yet. There are some greedy ones out there. I'm always honests with my clients. I say this is what I'm going to do, this is how it's done...Are you on board. I eplain everthing I do yo my clients. That way they undertsand and it gives them a since of security and trust. |
