I have GL's in and really need to color my grey roots on top of my head.  I use to color my own hair all of the time but I am not sure that I should attempt this on my own with these in.

Anyone have any experience with this?  I always have to have my roots colored with the GL's in but just don't want to pay 100.00 plus for roots only.

Any recs on a good at home color to use for this?

I am medium dark brown right now.

I should clarify I just want to do my roots.  I have had it colored 4 or 5 times when I have had GL's in previously but always had the person putting in the extensions color it for me. 

I absolutely do not want to shorten the life span of these but also can't stand the excessive grey either!!

If you really really want to do it, maybe just around the hairline and on your part with a mascara wand..... deposit colors can really be hinkey with extension hair.  Somebody here said maybe it was because there were some extensions that had metallic dyes in them.  Sorry to cause controversy.... I'm a bit more concerned about depositing color than lifting in this case.

    Would love to know what Metalgirl or Tanglesrc or Rae thought on this one.

Hi Sesame! I have a client that needs to get her roots done every 3 weeks to cover grey.  I use Racoon's Euro hair on her and she wears the hair for months before coming back to me and the hair's still in great shape (re-useable still). 

GL's hair however is Indian and not european so imo you should be ok colouring your roots but i would watch you dont pull the colour through the GL hair incase it does effect the hair since it would already have been through a colour process already.

I may try this.  I should have also specified that the only area I will color is the actual part on top of my head where there aren't any extensions.  And I am not going to lift or lighten--just darken.

I do root colors around extensions (primarily shrink links) all the time.

Have someone help you make sure you keep the color off the extension hair, just on the roots.

Demi permanent colors will not cover gray, they will blend it, but not cover it.

If you are going for a drugstore brand of color, if you stick with Clairol or L'Oreal they should not contain any metallic salts.  In fact, there are very few products on the market that contain metallic salts.  The only one I can think of is that "Just For Men" stuff.
