I am going to Jamaica in a couple weeks and want to have my hair braided so I dont have to deal with styling.  Last time I went I had microbraids which I loved except for one thing - the ITCH. I used kanekolon extensions.  I wonder if the kanekolon caused the itching, and maybe I would have better luck with human hair, or maybe the braids were just too tight...or is there a product that will help?  Thanks!

Nope, it's not the hair. Itching is normal with braids and, for most people, goes away within a few days. But there are several things you can do to relive the itching, such as using astringent, tea tree oil spray (not ure tea tree oil; that's too harsh), or medicated braid spray. medicated braid spray is cheap (under $5) and available at most hair stores or ethnic beauty supply stores (sometimes in chain drugstores like Walgreen's or Osco).

i wore the individual braids for over 5 yrs, i had over 150 of them, used jumbo braid, yaki braid, human hair, all kinds, i tried it- never once did the itching cease, i had them redone once a month, i tried all the things mentioned as well as voodoo lol. they itch. period. took a year to get rid of the scabby like scars and start new hairgrowth, i have inch long hair all over from them. they were certainly fun though! but very very itchy, tight, stinky, uncomfy, i could go on...but they look GREAT! what we do for looks!

If you don't want to apply anything topical, a non-drowsy antihistamine for the daytime will really help. Before bed you can take a regular Benedryl.

i've used 1 part white vinegar to 10 parts water in a spray bottle after shampooing which really helped my itching with pinchbraids. shampoo, spray the diluted vinegar, rinse well, then condition.

Sea Spray, $9 from dreadlock installers or hair suppliers works great for itch.  Also as Rae said,  anything with tea tree... even Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo will do.  Or get Tea Tree oil from the health food store and mix it in with water and a little (10%) conditioner.  Have fun in Jamaica.

i got a sew-in weave once, the girl used synthetic hair in the braids, and they itched soooo bad. i paid her 300 bucks for doing them and the itching was so bad i had them taken out 2 days later. about a year later i got plastichaar installed with microrings and my back and arms itched so bad i had those taken out 3 days later. now i get microbraids every 4 months and only human hair for me! with the human hair i get NO itching. my advice if it itched once dont use it again!

and god said let there be hair extensions.
