What do most of you shrinkie/link users use to loop the hair into the shrinkie? That teeny hook with the wood handle that everyone sells? That thing sucks. It doesn't grab enough hair. I remember someone talking about a wire loop on the end of a handle, but I've never seen such a thing for sale.
I'm curious as to what you all use. Between amm's new megahold shrinkies, the cheap heat wand, and infinite methods of pretipping hair, I'm ready to go back - it's just putting them in with that ridiculous hook! That's where the whole procedure breaks down. |

My husband made me my own after having no luck with the tiny latch hooker.He took a regular paper clip and bent it over so it was narrow enough to go through the shrinkie and adequately grab the hair.It worked great .Plus he used a pink one,lol -------------

I don't know anything about the hook, but being the "make do" kind of person that I am....I can think of a couple of things you could use, though I'm not sure how they'd compare to the hook because I've never used the hook. 1. A crochet hook. They make a ton of sizes and they're cheap cheap cheap. Experiment with a few. 2. You could use a need threader. 3. You could make one by bending a twistie tie in half (the kind that you use to close bread bags). Twist together the tips of the wire and walaa!!!! A flexible, size adjustable threader! |

I've used a crochet hook and it didn't work too well. The needle threader might work; that reminds me that someone suggested a dental floss loop. The paper clip is a good one, too!

| If I can ever figure out how to resize a photo so I can post I would show you that tool!!! But I would get a spool of wire at the craft store andbuy a wooded dowl (something about 3 to four inches long dril small hole at top double wire over to make 10 inch loop and glue it in there with something strong . Or just double the wire and wrap the botom with electrical tape to sort of make a handle and syop the shrinks from sliding down. Second one sounds a hell of alot easyer and I am sure it would work! |

The first tme I used floss - which worked good but was annoying b/c I had to get new pieces every 5 strands or so next I am using floral wire I found at the craft store, haven't tried it yet but it looks like it will work |

I have all three different sizes of the hooks with the wood handles that doc sells. I use the big one for shrinks unless I'm going close to the hairline. then I want to grab less hair and use the smaller ones. I use the smaller two for links. My only complaint is that there is no way to spring load it to be sure it closes before you pull the hair back through. |

I've always used the wood handle hooks, too.

Shrinkies are in. The other multi-temp wand is in, too for $30 less than Docs. If anyone sees that thing cheaper, let me know and I'll match it or go lower if I can. 
Glue? Hmmm. I don't know. There are so many kinds and each one seems to have its own little problem of some sort. Aleene's is great but Amanda reported some problems with it that make it seem unsuitable for long wear (when it's not coated over with something else). Think I'll pick me up some silicone today and see how that works. I love latex but even after they're done drying and I store them, the tips get all stuck together. Someone also mentioned thinning Liquid Gold when it gets stringy but I'm leery about the solvent that's used for that because it ultimately transfers into the hair. amm I'm the one that thins the LG. I use one of the listed LG ingedients to it. so its getting in the hair either way... |

| Amm, I tiped over sope pre tiped hair with silicone-no go they came out right away! Did you ever get that threder I sent? It didn't come back so I hope it made it. Dose any one know how long that one on the link is or howmany it will hold. It looks like a better option than the doc threders. |

| I had such a hard time with that stupid threader. It was taking forever to thread the hair/shrinkie, so what I did was splice the shrinkie from top to bottom so that all I had to do was wrap the spliced shrinkie around my hair and the pretip and then use the heatwand over it. It was much quicker for me that way, my fingers arent very coordinated. |

hairpiece.com sells a professional threader. they are $20 they are like the doc locks threader cept longer and sturdier. they can hold prob around 40 shrinks or locs they dont show them on their site, however you can call and tell them you want the long silver threader with the latch hook on it |

| I've seen those ez threaders at the local black hair shops, for threading beads onto hair. Considered picking one up, but it looked too thick to pass through an extend-tube. Shrinkies are bigger, though. Anyway, it looked hella easier than that darn hook I've been using. I'd considered making one myself from thin wire, just as Marie87 described. |

amm Took me forever to figure out which thread this was in... anyhow. I use trichlorethene aka trichloroethylene aka TCE. I don't know how much of a chemistry background you have but there are a few others out there with similar names that are not not not the same thing. I looked it up once before when Kristin had asked. It's roughly $20/half liter. I think. There are different grades of it as well. I don't know what the purity difference is between the lab grade and the home improvement store deck cleaner grade. But you are used to buying industrial grade stuff for your soap so... |

I use a regular bobby pin. Works like a charm and holds my hair in place while I thread it through. Octavia
