After more than 15 years of *heavy* smoking, I've finally decided to quit this weekend. I've got my Zyban and nicotine patches, but I'm terrified that I won't make it, lol, or that I'll gain 50 pounds.

Any tips, tricks, or advice?

:)

OHmyGosh GOOD LUCK!! That's a very important step! Way to go, Jenny.

Don't worry about gaining 50 lbs. - the DietPower software is there for you!

Just kidding. You won't gain 50 pounds. You'll make it.

Excellent news. Good luck to you!

I quit smoking 4 years ago after 20 years. Let me tell you, it feels SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good not to smoke anymore. You won't believe the difference in breathing even after just one week.

I used the patch for 2 days and had the most bizarre, vivid dreaming so I took them off and went cold turkey. They work very well for a lot of people, though. Don't hesitate to get a scrip' from the doctor to start. You want all the help you can get at the beginning.

The hardest part I had was while driving because I used to light up all the time in the car. You'll miss the habit of it but it gets better with time.

Stick to low carb snacks or veggie sticks of some kind to substitute for that lost feeling you'll definitely experience.

You have lots of support here if ya need it!

I've never been a smoker, so I can't help with tips...but i know that Zyban should help keep you from gaining weight.

Good luck and good choice!! :)

Oh that's great! Good for you! It sounds like youre ready and want to quit...which will give you the drive to stick to your guns!

I'm not a smoker either...so I can't help out there.

But I wish ya the best of luck!

I quit cold turkey two and half weeks ago.  So far so good.

Just try to stay out of high temptation situations for a while.  Don't go out when the office is taking their smoke break.  Stay away from the booze if you are at all like me and smoke five times as much once the liquor is in.

And good luck!

I completely and wholeheartedly recommend Wrigleys Bubblemint Orbit gum.  Go ahead and buy 15 packs and put them in every pocket.  That along with the Zyban should keep you busy and keep you from eating your way through the process.

That Zyban really is a miracle.  I took it for two weeks before I quit... started taking it for depression after I had a miscarriage... and ended up quitting smoking.  I just didn't need them anymore.

Sadly I started again in March when my dad died, crisis smoker...but I'm getting ready to quit again. and again if necessary.

Jenny that's wonderful.  I've got all fingers and toes crossed for you.  Me and my hubby stopped smoking a year ago and we can't believe we ever smoked now its great.  We had tried before by cutting down but it didn't work we always seemed to creep back up on our intake.  The cold turkey was the only way for us.  We found it hard like Amm in the car on the way to work in the morning and at dinner break and after every meal so we bought those little chew bars to replace the smoking after meals, you know like the wham bars and stuff that get stuck to your teeth.  They take ages to chew on so the feeling of something missing had gone by the time we'd finished them and I only put 4lb on from eating those and stopping smoking which has now come off again xxx

Thanks, girls! I'm terrified, but also pretty psyched. Smoking is so harmful, expensive, and inconvenient, among other things, so the other day, I was just like, "That's it--I've had enough." Now, I just need to follow through.

By the way, I got free nicotine patches from the City of New York for agreeing to be in a survey!

good luck Jenny, I know its a hard habit to break. I wish you all the luck in the world!

Im a smoker too. Ive quit several times over the years. Ive quit for a year at a time. And then I always use an excuse (when I get stressed) to start back up. Ive never had a problem quitting, once Ive put my mind to it! I wish I could get my mind back in that mode again! The hardest thing for me is saying NO to the first cigarette. Ive been thinking more about quitting again lately....maybe my mind is getting ready again!

thats wonderful to hear!!!  I personally dont smoke and never have, I am allergic to it, which makes it hard to go to clubs and out because i am really sick the next day!  I would just take the money you would spend on the cigarettes and put it in a piggy bank everyday...like make it a habitual thing like after dinner or when u would go try to smoke, and then when you think you are healed...or have completely stopped, see how much money you have...and then you can buy more hair! :-) sorry just thought it was a good idea...it definetly is an expensive habit though!  Goodluck, you can do it!

Jenny, when I quit smoking I used the patch and it helped a lot...did have those vivid dreams, though, amm...weird! So I wouldn't advise applying them in the evening. The one thing that I think helped me the most, and probably helped me from gaining the weight that I had every other time I tried to quit...COFFEE!. If you already drink coffee regularly this won't help, and you could debate whether a caffeine addiction is any better than a nicotine addiction, but it helped me tonnes. Gave me something to do with my hands and mouth, and added that little stimulant edge that my body was used to. I think it really took the edge off the withdrawal. I've tapered off a lot now, just a cup or two a day, but I drank pots of the stuff when I first quit. The second best thing I did was stop drinking. That was when I always relapsed after quitting before...in a bar, with friends...I'll just have one for old times sake...all of a sudden I was smoking again . It was two years after I quit before i started drinking again and felt safe. It was worth it though.

Good luck to you. It's so worth it, and you'll feel so proud of your self :)

but I'm going to quit again.

You know what may havehelped me in the last two weeks as well (cause i've really only had cravings when mad, or having a drink).  I just joined a gym.  Like nearly simultaneously.  I mean I worked out some anyhow, But I've really cranked up the total time.  Though I hadn't planned it this way. hmmm.

So maybe an extra run in the morning when you would normally stick you rhead out for that first morning drag.  crap.  Now I need to go find soething to distract myself.

Good Luck Jenny girl! I had a friend that went to see the mad russian and she was able to quit and if she could quit I know you can. Think of all the money you'll save? Everytime you want to light up put the money you were going to spend on cigarettes in a piggy bank and save it up and then splurge on some really funky hair as a reward.

But good luck to ya!

With the money you'll save on cigarettes, you'll have your boob job in no time.

Keep it in the day works too. Or the moment. Just don't smoke for one day. Drinking alot of H20, walking, meditating, joining a smoke quitters support group, believing in yourself. I KNOW you can do it, just for today.

I smoked about 20 years ago, ended up in the hospital and had surgery (girl stuff) and never had the desire to smoke again! When I got out of the hospital, I just didn't want to smoke anymore. Weird. I haven't had a drink in fifteen years. Anything to quit is hard but it sounds like you want it bad enough! You can do it!

Jenny - GOOD LUCK - and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I smoked a long time ago and quit after a night of (what else?) heavy drinking and smoking and I was like GROOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! when I smelled my clothes.

Anyway - I am really glad you let us all know. I love this board, and I am so glad to be able to offer support to you. And I just want to say "you don't have to do it perfectly". Ya know? Like, if you happen one day to have one teeny-tiny cigarette along the way, be patient and gentle with yourself. I agree with the cold turkey approach, AND I just think it's really important to be compassionate with yourself and what you will be going through. And on the other hand maybe it will be really easy!!

In any case, I'm here, and I know everyone else is too!!

I love zyban!!!! It made me forget to smoke and added benifit it helped my ADHD.Ahhhh to focus. To bad the cost was so great or it could be lack of will power Hmm..I went off it and started again. Truly one sided I will only date non smokers because I will not smoke if I'm dating one. It gives me that extra jolt of guilt I so need. I have had hipnosis, and patch oh yea acupunture and every morning for an hour or so I go cold turkey.I do wish you luck and maybe joining you ,I have a date tomarow with a non smoker!!
