Hey everyone, I was wondering if it was bad to leave jojoba oil in the hair all night? I read somewhere that increased oil production causes hair loss? My hair has JUST started growing in thick again, I dont want to ruin it. Oh yeah one other thing, in shampoo is the only ingredient to look out for the sulfates? Thank you!

I just looked at all my shampoo and the only one without SLS is Pantene, but I thought noone here liked pantene? Is ammonium lareth sulfate bad as well?

It's fine to leave jojoba in all night. It won't hurt your hair at all.

I don't use shampoo, so I can't comment on ingredients.

I use jojoba oil on the ends and top layer of my hair every day.  I put a little essential oil in it for fragrance.  It has done nothing but help.

Everyone has their own hair routine, usually developed by trial and error.

But I really like "Dave's Dilution Solution"; I put probably less than a teaspoon of shampoo in a hair color bottle and fill it up with water; swirled, not stirred; and then shampoo with that.  Then condition, rinse.  Sometimes I apply just a drop or two of jojoba oil to wet hair ends.  If not, I try to do it at least once a day on dry ends and top layers from the ears down.  My hair is very fine and it does not weigh my hair down at all.  I love it.

Hope this helps a little,

strawberryfine

Rainfrogg: It sounds like you're putting jojoba on your scalp.  Most people only use it from the ears down (including me, so I have no idea about how long you should leave it on your scalp).

I prefer shampoo without any sulfates of any kind for superstitious reasons (I get Avalon online or at a GNC store).  But diluting your shampoo like said above would help reduce any bad effects you might get (and also helps balance the scalp out and keep it from getting both flaky and dry, and too oily too fast).

I use pantene conditioner (not the shampoo), but only on the last inch of my hair, only once a week, and clarify every week or 2 weeks to remove it's buildup (because it's chock full of cones).  As long as you remove the buildup, you should be fine using it if you like it.

Thank you all for all your advice. Yes I do put it on my scalp, I read Jojoba helps dissolve the scalp buildup the best, and it worked wonderfully, yes its ridiculously greasy, but worth it. I just hope thats not bad since none of you guys put it on your scalp? It literally felt like my scalp was 'drinking' the oil. I will definitely do the dilution, is it still neccesary when the shampoo is natural? I'll do it anyway. Thank you guys!

I don't know if it's "necessary", but I dilute all of my shampoo, even natural because of the effect not using such concentrated stuff has on my scalp (not because I'm watering down the chemicals, though that's nice too for non-natural).

Dissolve scalp buildup?  What kind of buildup?  I wouldn't imagine much would build up on the scalp (if you mean stuff like 'cones?), since skin naturally sloughs off and replaces itself so frequently.  If your scalp likes it though, hey, go for it!  Maybe leaving it on too long wouldn't be so great for clogging pores, but since you're the forerunner here, you'll have to tell us what works and what doesn't!

http://mp.hairboutique.com - Hairboutique MP has brand name jojoba, and http://www.mystifyyoursenses.com - Mystify Your Senses or Emporium Naturals has generic brand jojoba.

Happy shopping

Definitely not bad to leave jojoba in your hair overnight or longer.  It closely resembles natural sebum.  Leave it in your hair as long as you want.  I apply sparingly (don't marinate the hair in it).  And as Susan says, just apply it to the ends (or mid-shafts, if dry).  I don't apply to the scalp or hair near it -- the scalp produces sufficient sebum.  But hey, if applying jojoba to your scalp works for you... by all means, keep it up.

With respect to where to find jojoba oil...

I just found a bottle of it at Bath & Body Works, combined with avocado oil.  Just FYI for those of you who need the instant gratification of shopping non-virtually.  Plus these stores seem to be everywhere, popping up like mushrooms.

You can get jojoba oil at a healthfood store.
