Why do hairdressers use aluminum foils when coloring hair.  Does this prevent your highlights being to light near the scalp due to heat from your head. So one can get closer to the scalp than normal?  Or am I just wishing....

I suspect it has more to do with the cheap price and ease of working with foil.  Its an easy way to keep hair separated so you can do different colors on chunks of hair at once.  What else would they use that's as cheap and pliable?

Anyone else know what effect the aluminum would have as related to heat?

I think you both have it right as to the cheapness and pliability, not sure about the heat.  I find it odd especially when directions tell you NOT to use anything metal, not even for stirring or mixing.  I assume it has something to do with oxidization.  I see now alot of salons and pros are using Saran wrap.  Mostly to insulate the hair from the heat and also as you said to separate large chunks.

Actually from what I know, I'm pretty it helps keep in the heat in your hair - so that the colours/bleach will process quicker.

But I'm not a HD so I'm probably just guessing :)

It's the pliability and hold factor.  It does not have anything to do with heat.  Some of the highlighting tools are made of a clear plastic.  I find them very hard to use since I am used to foil.
