I've seen many types of waves and some look all greasy and flat and others look all natural. What is the cause of this

Some people take their pics with pomade and grease in their hair, that's what makes it look shiny. Also the flash can make hair look shiny.

I've noticed that if you take your pics with flash you hair will look very shiny and it will be somewhat difficult to see all of your waves. On the other hand if you use sunlight or a lamp, your waves will appear deeper but they will also look dry. I prefer lamp light or sunlight.

i think the more corse your hair is the more "ripple" or closer waves you get. more straighter hair gets the spaced out waves. thats what ive noticed so far

That has to deal more with hair texture and less with lighting.
