Please help!!! I have been with my hairdresser for 3 years, and I've
followed him to 3 different salons. I thought our relationship was
positive. I recenty had my hair colored and highlighted. When I got
home, I noticed my highlights were extra bleached out at the root.
This has never happened before. Does anyone know why this
occured? Anyway, I called him up and he told me he'd call me to set
up an appointment. He never did, but instead I received a certified
letter in the mail stating he will no longer be my hairdresser. The
letter was hurtful to say the least! Please be honest, was this right
for him to do? Shouldn't he have fixed the problem first? I am not
sure how to handle this. Should I request he pay me to have the hair
fixed elsewhere? If you had expereince with this, please help!

I would say this was an extraordinarily low-class stunt on his part.

IMO he has a professional obligation to help correct his mistake.  By definition, his refusal to do so negates his professionalism.

Beyond that, it is certainly within his rights to no longer service your hairstyling requests, but that's certainly no way to build or maintain a client base -- and serves as a caution to those who are already clients (If only they knew!).

I'm sorry to hear what happened.  Perhaps you can find a better color specialist who can help you, now.

It probably happened because the body heat from your scalp caused it to process faster at the root.  He should have tried to fix it.  I'd be offended too if I followed someone for so long being a good customer, then one mistake happens and he runs for the hills! 

I think I'd calmly show up at the salon with the certified letter and ask him why he overreacted so badly.  And of course tell him I was offended and I was never going to sit in his chair again even if he offered to fix it right then (because I wouldn't trust him).

Something similar happened to me, my hairdresser did not want to continue styling my hair after he orchestrated a disaster!

I had light brown(natural colour) hair with blonde highlights, and I had decided to have it coloured a shade or two darker. However, it ended up a bitter brown, nearly black colour and was so horrible. I didn't pay for it, and was supposed to go in the next week to have it redone. The hairdresser was always conveniently booked up anytime I called that I got so peeved off and went elsewhere.

I don't think your hairdresser should have sent you that letter, I would be upset too. I hope you find someone else suitable!

Thanks everyone for your words of wisdom! But the saga
continues... The hairdresser left a harassing message on my machine
yesterday and told me never, never, never touch my hair again and
never to come into the shop again! When I talked with the shop
owner about it today, she was shocked. He told her he would take
care of the problem and make things right! When the owner found
out about the message, she again apologized and wants to take care
of the mistake free of charge. I am glad to see that the owner is
caring and sympathetic about everything and wants to make things
right! I'll keep you posted if anything else comes up!

Jeez!  He's crazy!  I think personally I'd ask her to book me in a time slot when he won't be there!

Ok! For those of you that have been following my saga, hopefully
this will be the last update to my story!!! Good news... The
hairdresser will be sending me a check in the mail for
reimbursement for the highlights! The owner called me today and
said he felt bad I took everything the wrong way. Personally, I think
he handled the situation wrong, and he is saying what he needs to to
keep his job. But, now I can move on!   Thanks for having this forum
to vent my thoughts to people out there who care!!!

Good to hear that at least the salon owner acknowledged the salon's fault for screwing up, and has agreed to reimburse you the cash you paid (and of course that's hardly sufficient, after all we're talking about your hair here).

Keep an eye out for that check.  Call them in a week if you haven't received it.  Cause that's one of those infamous phrases -- "The check is in the mail" (meaning, it isn't).
