Sounds like the basic color guide.4a would be a level 4 ash.Which is a medium ash brown. As far as the other,4b I'd imagine the b to stand for brown? or basic.Usually it would be listed as 4n,or natural/nuetral. There is one more which would be G.Which stands for golden. This guide is used for all hair levels.1 being black.10 being platinum blonde. And the letter as i said before determines what tone(ash, nuetral,or golden).Where did you see 4a/4b listed?

uhhhm not quite

this is the categorization of hair types...from what I understand

1 level being straight hair

2 level being wavy

3 level being curly (loose curls)

4 level being kinky/curly/coily (tight curls)

after that there are sub levels....a,b,c,....you can have a mixture of diff hairtypes for example I am a mixture of 3bc and 4a

go to     longhaircareforum.com

on top of the website go to    hair type
