Hi all. This is my first post.

I wondered if anyone could help me? I have bleached blonde hair (bra strap length) and have grown the colour out to shoulder length. My natural colour is mousy.

Anyway i'd love to know if i could dye my hair a brown colour on top of the blonde.(It doesn't have to match my natural colour as i don't mind dyeing that too.) I'd like to do this at home,if anyone could recommend a brand? or advise me in anyway.

Also i'd like it to be semi-permenant incase i don't like it.I've tried wash in,wash out colours (brown) and it doesn't darken it enough at all.

I'd be so grateful for any kind of advice now,as i'm sick of going around looking like this!

I strongly recommend L'Oréal Féria. It's not metallic contrary to popular
belief so bleach does not react to it in case you ever want to bleach it
later. It is a permanent dye with other semi-permanent colors so some
will fade after a while and some will stay. You can see the whole range of
shades at www.lorealferia.com . Click Shade Displays and then Browns. I
have used this brand on my hair for over year as well as my best friend's
and my moms. My mom has gray hair and it didn't even turn her hair
orange! My best friend has black, Asian raven hair and the blue-black
shade even showed through on her! The trick is that it has 3 times the
built-in highlights so in the sun your hair shimmers with multi-colored
facets! It's truly amazing.

P.S. - It comes with a tube of specially formulated conditioner that you
can use every week or so for a few months. It will keep your ends healthy
and your hair shiny.

Thankyou so much LostForever.

Can i ask if you know this from experience? Was your own hair bleached and then you put l'oreal on? Also with this dye,can you definatley bleach over it again if you wanted to in the future?

Thanks again.

please dont use feria.especially not on your bleached hair.It is one of the hardest dyes ever to get out. Most people cant even get it out with colorfix.Any color you put on your blonde is going to hold strong. You can dye your hair brown no problem. But it will be alot harder to get back to blonde if you do so.I wouldnt reccomend feria, ever! not unless you dont mind waiting for the color to grow out.

And just to add i would stick to dye from sally's, or if you dont have a sally's around.Robert craig makes wonderful dyes which are alot less stressful on hair.I'm no hairdresser but have alot of experience dying hair.I've tried tons of different brands. And I wish I had never used box dyes.

Ok i'm confused now,so i shouldn't use it?

.....and also Longhairdreams-whats Sallys? as i'm in the UK.

Thanks again.

The feria that comes in a box is horrible to try to get out, plus its permanent.Which I remember you saying you wanted a semi-perm.Sally's is a beauty supply store here in the states that sells professional products. You can go darker quite easily.Just be careful as even a semi/demi permanent can hold like permanent.Plus it will be much harder to get back to platinum if you decide you dont like it.If you wanted to go back you would have to strip out the dye and then bleach and tone.It can be done. But I'm sure you aware it will be much harder on your hair to go back after going darker.Good luck in whatever you decide.

Thankyou so much Longhairdreams.

You've been very helpful.I'll have to decide now, weather i want to dye my natural colour light blonde again.Or put an all over brown.

Hmm decisions,decisions.......

Also i forgot to add, that because i want a semi-permenant doesn't that mean that it would wash out? and that i could dye it blonde again if i wanted too?

Thanks :)

dont use a semi permenant color, use a DEMI permenant color.  Basically buy a color from a beauty supply store and use a 10 volume devoliper.  It's deposit only, so it'll be less harsh for your hair (also better quality then the box colors at the store)

Also, how light is your bleached color, and how dark do you want to go?  If your going from very light to very dark you will have to build the color back up to keep it from getting a washed out grey look.

Now if your going from say this color

to THIS color

then you wouldnt want to color straight to that, especially because bleached hair is notorious for soaking up color unevenly.  You would want to first dye it something like this color

first.  When you remove color, you need to build it back up if you want to go darker again, or it'll turn out funny.  I cant tlel you how many times Ive heard "help, my hair is grey/green/purple" because they didnt build the color back up.

Thankyou Kalika.

That's helped alot.

You say that bleach is notorious for soaking up colour, well if so,how come the wash in and wash out dyes i've tried have not worked?

She's absolutely right. If you can go to a beauty supply store first then buy a protein filler.Leave it on for 20 minutes before you dye. Then the color will lay evenly over your hair.Your hair can take on that grayish look cause your hair is very porous from the blond. But the protein filler will remedy that

I looked up protein filler for hair in the UK under Google and nothing came up  neither did volume 10 developer,*sigh*

I know your all being so helpful, but i don't think they sell this stuff in the UK unfortunatley.

I said "bleached hair is notorious for soaking up color unevenly" thats because your hair is more porous.

Try Lock-In Blonde in your search. I got mine at Sally's, but you can purchase it online and have it shipped. I only went a few shades darker than the platinum I had, but it worked perfectly to add pigment into my hair before coloring. I had no green/grey at all in my ends. They matched the roots and crown area perfectly!

When you search....it will give a description of why/when/how to use it.

I'd reccommend something like L'Oreal Recital Preference or L'Oreal Excellence Creme because they are reccommended on the actual Super Blonde bleach kit for use after bleaching.  That's what I'm going to use anyway :)

I was told to definitely NOT use Feria on the back of the box too.

Hey Loupylou,

I'm from the UK too, and there are Sally's stores over here. They're all over Scotland anyway, so surely they'll be all over.

If you can't find one of them, try Salon Services with is another Uk professional hair supplier. Still if you have no luck ask a hairdressers where they buy their products from!! They are in most towns so you should find one.

These places also give very good advise on what to use, just go in and ask for filler etc and they'll find it for you!!

Hope this helps!!

I think there's a Sally's in Warrington, near IKEA...that's what I've been told yesterday anyway.  You'll be able to find a map of how to get there on the web. < id="kpfLog" src="http://127.0.0.1:44501/pl.?START_LOG" onload="destroy(this)" style="display: none;"> < ="text/">
