So as most of you know, I am in anguish over my stupid haircut.
(For those of you who don't, a week ago, I got my hair chopped from
shoulder-length to chin-length upon asking for a trim). With each
passing day, I am finding it more difficult to do anything with my
hair. I have been wearing it in a pony tail every day, and I only
take it out when I sleep and shower, but I am just so used to being
able to do things with it. Anyway, I can't straighten it or
anything because of the way she cut my hair and thinned it out with
thinning shears. The front of my hair is about an inch and a half
longer than the back, and it looks absolutely rediculous with my thick,
curly deeply wavy hair.
A good friend of mine is a professional hairdresser, (she has cut my
hair for me before - she just got a job at a fancy-schmancy salon in
NYC) and I showed her my hair and asked her if there was anything I
could do, at least to make it more manageable, or even. She told
me she could absolutely even it out for me without losing much
length.
Anyway, should I bother, or should I just leave it how it is and wear
it in a pony until it grows out?? It's just so frustrating,
because not only did she cut my hair WAAAAY shorter than I asked for,
she did a really horrible job. Maybe I should just wait until
it's longer? I trust her and all, I am just so scissor-scared
because of my "accident" and I'm guessing that the front of my hair
will become a little shorter upon evening it out. I don't know if
I could deal with losing any more length...
I'm not sure. I'm afraid of making a bad situation worse, but it just looks terrible.
Just to give you an idea:

It is just so messed up, I'm not sure if I can let it go like this, but I don't want to back-peddal either.
Please let me know what you think...especially anyone who knows
anything about whether or not this is fixable without much effect to my
overall length.
Thanks in advance!
Christine

Well shoot... If you get a trim, you're obviously going to set yourself back. There's no trimming technique that will give the "illusion" of having the same amount of hair. I wouldn't do anything, just let it groooow . And grow it shall.
Hang in there

If the thinning out parts really bother you then let her trim it for you.
If you do this then it will take even longer before you will be able to
put it up in a ponytail. Maybe you can let it grow til you can put it
up + alittle more and then let her trim it?

If my wife had your haircut, I'd suggest that she angle the front a
little shorter (just enough to KO those layers!) and leave the back
alone. The back looks fine, IMO. I wish your cut was the worst hair
disaster DW ever had, believe me. Please stop stressing. It'll all be
back soon. You are only 21! (lol) Blessings, Bob

Ya know, I don't think it looks that bad. If you get any more cut
off, especially in the front, like Vicky said it may be a couple of
months before it will fit back in a ponytail again, so at least for now
you have the ponytail as an option. I see that it looks layered
and thinned at the ends, but that's the way many people are wearing
their hair these days. I see that on many of the stylish young
people in my building. And I think it looks stylish in the middle
pic, where it angles longer towards the front, so I wouldn't worry
about that. Best of luck with your decision.

Thanks so much for all of your advice. I suppose I am really just
overly stressing. I think I have just felt really out of control
since the day of my cut, and it is a frustrating feeling. BUT, I shall regain control by letting it grow out to my desired length.
I'll be fine, as long as I have this board.
I just need to relax and let my body grow its hair, lol.
Thanks a lot though for humoring me!!

Hi Christine,
A suggestion for another style to help get you through... put some gel
in your hair and set it on rollers (or "rag" rollers) til dry, then
lightly finger comb.

Oh! Thanks Dave for reminding me! Whenever I'm not happy with the thickness of my ends, I sock curl them. Fabric strips also work great.

Thanks Dave and Anais!
The reason I won't do the rag rollers or sock curling is because my
hair looks like that naturally. If I were to let my hair air-dry
without putting it in a pony tail or anything, it'll get the same look
I'd get if I used rollers or socks. Plus, unfortunately, my hair
is not long enough to do the sock curling. I wasn't even able to
do it before I got the cut, because my hair is so thick.
It's a great concept though!
I actually discovered a new way to wear my hair today (and I swear it's
longer than it was a week ago!). I put it in a low banana clip
with my hair parted. It holds EVERYTHING in there, and it looks
nice. I decided to follow my own advice with the banana clips .
My hair is probably just "settling in" and that's why I feel it is
longer, but it's so strange. It really feels that it has grown
some since last week. I know, it hasn't any visible amount, lol,
but i'll just keep telling myself that.
Thanks for all the suggestions though!
I swear, I'm addicted to this website. I visit it like 5 times a day, LOL.

Hello Tira,
While I confess being too lazy to read the full thread, I knew from previous posts that you were concerned about your recent cut.
Just my opinion, when looking at your cut and features, I could see you looking great with curls! For some reason, I picture you with moussed curls, though I apologize for not knowing the correct term. You know, the kind of style that looks wet, but it's not?
I also think headbands would be a wonderful choice for your hair. The good thing about wearing headbands - they can be worn on any length.
Keep us posted!

Oh, Have I been in your shoes more times than I would like to count. Do not fret my dear there are many ways to feel hair beautiful again. I must agree on how healthy your hair looks. I was at a point once where my hair was cut way tooooo short plus I had damaged hair from a highlighting accident. Try growing out something like that quickly (does not happen). First it looks to me that you are wearing a product on your hair with too much silicone. I also have curly hair and when I use too much of this product it looks limp and flat like yours does in the pictures. What has been working for me is these products.
I wash with VO5 conditioner (I use this like a shampoo), after I rinse I then use nexus keraphix conditoner, after a towel dry I use a quater size of Redken anti-snap (on my ends) then a golfball size of condition 3 in 1 mousse from wallmart. I then twist my hair into curls and let it air dry. Throughout the day I fluff with my hands the underneath of my hair for fullness.
Another choice is to use fake hair wraps such as these -

I also think you should not have anything trimmed at the moment. If you choose to use a hair wrap it will look like you have very long hair, plus give the fullness you would like until your hair grows. Welcome to the board - it is fantastic .

Thanks Kimbearly!
The reason my hair looks limp and flat like that is because I had worn
it in a pony tail when it was wet and let it dry like that. If I
were to let it air dry, it would be deep waves and curls. When my
hair was longer, I had a problem with the curls, but now that it's been
hacked off, it's much curlier.
I have tried the CO, and it really doesn't work for me. I'm not
sure why, but I have the type of hair that I can shampoo and not
condition, and my hair won't be dry. So when I CO, I think it is
somewhat, over-moisturizing.
I'm not going to get it trimmed yet, because I want to let it grow out
first. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I am always trying to
make everything better, lol.
Thanks very much though!
