My friend's 18th birthday party is coming up, and I have no idea what to wear!

Okay, maybe I have some idea, after all, it is a  roostertail party...

I'm 16, and I don't want to look too old, but I don't want to look like I'm 12 either. I'm also worried about looking too simple.

Any suggestions?

Well, I just got back from a friend's bday party today! Here's what I wore:

Hair down and straight, parted on side with side-swept bangs
light eyeliner on top lid, mascara, lip balm
long sleeve blue, black, lime, yellow and teal - striped cotton shirt
hawaiian print teal short-sleeve button up
blue cotton miniskirt
black leggings, pulled mid-calf
teal sequined slippers (had to take them off and replace with bowling
shoes, yuck...)

Anyway, think fun and creative clothes. After all, we're young, and pretty
soon we'll look ridiculous in "fun and creative." Also, go for a decade vibe,
like I went with an 80s vibe. And just wear what you feel like on that day!

Oh, okay.  *pokes the board for disallowing innocent words like that*

Most of the dresses for parties like those are pretty simple.  But a simple dress can be good, because you can make it more personal with accessories to match your style ^_^ .  So even if your dress is simple and black, or whatever, you can play it up with a bright scarf, deco earrings, a fancy hairclip. . . whatever suits who you are.

I have a feeling we share a sense of aesthetics.

I just bought one today. Strapless (not too great a move, but whatever. My mother says I have "nice shoulders".), black, inch-below-the-knee satin.

Yay for cameos.
