I'm in a similar situation.  My hair's not falling out or anything, in fact it's in great condition - I just want to go lighter than black.  I've been told that bleaching is probably best, but I'm not a hairdresser...

I can't find a stripper anywhere in shops...I think it's the hairdressers that get hold of them.  Be prepared to spend a small fortune :) .

Both stripping and bleaching damages your hair (not necessarily fries it), but you didn't tell us what you wanted, do you want your natural colour back?

Both stripping and bleaching will damage your hair.  Unfortunate but true, it doesn't matter who does it in terms of damage, however, and I"m saying this from experience (not my head, but my friend's) do NOT try to bleach or strip black hair yourself, it'll turn some kind of weird color (hers was orange) and if you think it's falling out now, you aint seen nothin' yet.  my hair is black currently (with large amounts of blond root). I asked my stylist about stripping it out and she said it would take at least three processings to get anywhere close to my natural color (yours probobly won't take that much if it's darker to begin with).  So yeah, get it done professionally, if at all, and expect some damage.  hope it works out okay.  :-)
