OK, so I have really thick, wavy hair. A lot of people I know claim to have thick hair, but they have no idea, lol. If my hair were straight, it'd be mid back length. I constantly get tangles, and constantly cut them out because they're that bad. So now my hair is uneven in a bunch of places.. the knots are driving me crazy, and I'm ready now to just hack it all off. I originally wanted that short choppy cut (also known now as the 'emo' cut..) but everyone has that, and I don't want to look like everyone else. OK, so it probably wouldn't work anyways, my hair is too thick. I was thinking of going for something like this. Wavy, choppy, sort of messy.

Only, I've cut my hair that short once before, and it was really poofy and .. I hated it. So I'm gonna thin out my hair. How does thinning work? I think I really have too much hair, and I'm just gonna shave some off from the bottom. OK so if you've gotten this far with my rambling.. I congratulate you.

Mainly, I just want some help on how to achieve a short haircut, without it looking thick, like my hair looked before, when I got it cut.

PS- I've tried reverse perm, and that didn't do anything for my hair at all.

Try a straightener..

Yeah, I have a straightener, but it takes FOREVER to do since my hair is so incredibly long and thick. (about one hour for straightening itself.. fifteen to twenty minutes for blowdrying) I wanna get it cut so it's quicker to straighten, plus I want a new style. (putting in violet and blue dye also)

Now that I think of it.. maybe I just have a really crappy straightener. Hm. Maybe thinking of ways to make more MONEY would be more productive. Haha

To get your hair thinned you have to find a stylist that knows what they are doing. My advice to you is look for people in your area that might have similar hair and ask them if they have it thinned and where they go for it.

I think if you get it properly thinned you can have that cut.

If you're having trouble finding a stylist you could call around and get some consultations where you just go and talk about your hair and don't get anything done that day. Ask around and see if maybe a stylist will let you watch them do some thinning on another client. Might be a hard thing to set up but it's worth asking. Unless you find a stylist who can do your hair without thinning it. See you're not only trying to find a good stylist for this time but you'll want one that can trim it well later on.

You do have a chance to have some practise runs with the stylists. You can have them do just a long hair trim on you to see how they do with that. Then go back later if you liked them to get your short cut.

Give yourself a few weeks to decide if possible. That way you can gather more pictures and look around for a stylist and all that.

Taking notes could come in handy. Not only write down adgvice here but take notes during a consultation and other things.
Treat it like a project because trying to find good thinning is.

Post a message here at HB on the salon board and see if someone knows a salon in your area.

I hope that helps. Good luck

I have really thick hair too. So i went to a hair stylist and ask what could be done to make my hair less-puffy...they said to find a shampoo that suits your hair. They also said they could thin my hair.
I tried bith things. The thinning part was gr8! It worked. And the shampoos that suited my hair were Vive, Thermasilk and Infusium 23.
Try those shampoos..maybe it'll help. Hopefully the thinning part will make the straightening of ur hair easier.
Hooe that helps!

Thinning hair with thinning shears removes bulk and releases weight. It gives the appearance of more volume. If you thin too much with curly hair your hair could begin to take on a very bushy appearance as the shorter hairs spring up from the rest of the hair making it even p00fier than it was before it was thinned.

Thinning shears isn't something I think you'd want done to your hair. You need to find someone who is experienced with wavy, curly hair or someone who can perform a Ouidad type haircut which is a special type of cut for people with curly or wavy hair who don't want their hair to look like a BUSH. It's mostly for very curly hair it's an expensive cut but the results are incredible. Check out http://www.ouidad.com - www.ouidad.com

As for the knots in your hair I'd suggest a gentle shampoo NOT PANTENE, NOT THERMASILK as those and many other commercial lines have Ammonium in them which can be a little harsh on the hair. Has your hair been chemically processed such as a color or perm? If so the ends might be damaged or over processed which could be one reason the knots are there. Try the Garnier Fructis line of Shampoo and Conditioner. They are about $3.50 each not bad and it's a pretty descent line. Also I'd recommend some Deep Conditioning or Leave-in Conditioner....Paul Mitchell has an excellent Leave-In Conditioner I use on every client who comes in to the salon or I've heard people say good things about Infusium 23 which you can get at Target or Wal*Mart that is a leave in conditioner too. As for the Paul Mitchell products you can pick it up anywhere their product line is sold....it's about $15 for a good size bottle.

Before you decide to chop your hair off ask yourself why you want short hair. What are your expectations or what you want with a shorter hairstyle. Short hair doesn't necessarily mean less maintenance which is something I think alot of people automatically assume with short hair. It means more frequent trims 6-8 weeks and many times it can mean as much maintenance as a longer hair style.

Consult with your stylist to find a look that fits your facial features and everything and make sure you feel comfortable with them and have confidence in knowing what they are doing. If you don't feel confident then don't have them cut your hair.

G'luck

Thanks for all the tips everyone! And Claude, I don't only want short hair because I think its easier to manage, I've always wanted short hair, my whole life I've pretty much had long hair, minus a couple years. I got a new conditioner and shampoo a couple days ago, mixed in some conditioner with my shampoo. So I used the combo, washed that out, then left in conditioner for a few minutes. That seems to make my hair a bit less frizzy. I haven't straightened my hair in awhile either, and I've been using peroxide and ammonia free hair dye, so that's been making my hair healthier too. (when I was younger I used to constantly put blonde highlights in it) I tried using my straightener today, it straightened it, but its still soo frizzy. So I bought a Solia straightener online today, a lot of the customer reviews claim that it helped their really frizzy hair, plus a few of my friends with curly and thick hair have the Chi straightener and it helps them, hopefully this straightener will help.

Also, my mom knew of a hair salon that has a woman working there with hair like mine, really thick and curly. So I'm going for an appointment tomorrow at 5. The only thing I have to do now is find pictures of what I want done. (Going for above shoulder length, choppy) When I'm done cutting and straightening and dying, I'll post pictures.

::edit:: Another reason I want to cut my hair, is because I've had so many hacked off areas, (from things from knots to bubblegum) theres lots of weird areas my hair is cut in, making it overally a weird shape. Lol. So.. cutting it will make it not so crazy.

Good luck. Glad you found someone who might give you what you need.

I'd say start with something between chin and shoulders. Maybe find something with some nice face framing.
