Instead of tying the ends of the pinch braids with thread can I just use rubberbands?

doesn't work.. tried it, braids are too bulky that way.

 

also, the thread is threaded into the hair to makew it more secre than just 'tied at the end'

I would also be afraid that over time the rubber bands would 'chew' away at the hair.

Yep, the rubber bands are bulky- plus, since oil eats away at rubber, the rubber bands get weak and snap. I was wearing a full head of rubber-band-tied extensions (because I can't pinchbraid on my own head, only other people's), and I lost quite a few over time and had to re-do a few braids a week.
