I`m not sure how many of you go to the pool... or have kids and take them to the pool. But I know that the sun and cholorine is really bad for hair!! What exactly can I use to to keep my hair healthy... and not dry out during the summer? Has anyone heard of UltraSwim? It`s a shampoo and condtioner I saw at Fruth for swimmers to keep the cholorine out of hair. Does anyone know if it`s any good? ------------- *AmberJune* http://twitter.com/AmberJune01 |

AmberJune, I go to the pool and swim about 3 times per week, and last summer I had the same concern you have because my hair had gotten long. I`m afraid I don`t have any leave-in suggestions, but the two tips I do remember are: (1) wet your hair before you go in the pool, which is supposed to make your hair absorb less chlorine than if you go in with dry hair, and (2) rinse your hair soon after you are done swimming. I have been doing the second tip religiously last summer and this summer, and it has made a difference for me. I have not tried the first tip, but maybe that would help, too. Here some tips from a book my sister has been using for several years with great results: Swimmers who want to protect their hair should take the following precautions: Go light on hair coloring, perming, waves, hot curlers/combs, and blow dryers. Wear a rubber bathing cap. Although it doesn`t keep all of the water out, it helps. Sports stores that sell swimmers` equipment should have caps in a wide range of sizes. Before putting the bathing cap on, put conditioner in your hair. After swimming, rinse hair with tap water, preferably using shampoo. To dry hair - don`t rub - pat or squeeze gently and/or wrap in a towel. Blow dry your hair only on medium or cool settings. Use a wide-tooth comb, not a brush, to detangle wet hair. You may experience a "coated" feeling in your hair from the swimmers` shampoo and conditioner is probably exactly that - a protective coating for the hazards of chlorine. Try using the swimmers` conditioner under the bathing cap while swimming and then shampoo and condition it out afterwards with a brand that doesn`t coat your hair. It`s a good idea to alternate which shampoos you use because the buildup of residue of shampoo on the hair shaft can cause your hair to be dull and lifeless. For dry hair, it is recommended that you use a protein shampoo labeled with substantive protein. The shampoo should be more than slightly acidic. Another option is to rinse your hair following shampoo with white vinegar and water or lemon and water. This acid rinse will help restore the natural shine to your hair. I can tell you the vinegar and water rinse works very well. Good luck! ;) ------------- |

I use UltraSwim and it works very well for me - just make sure you don`t get it in your eyes because it burns badly, or at least it did for me. ------------- Whitney |

Anyone tried the Bumble and Bumble Sun Spray, or whatever it`s called? It`s supposed to be like sunscreen for your hair.:D ------------- StArSpArK |

I`ve never tried them and I don`t know anyone who did but Malibu 2000 makes products for swimmers. http://Malibu2000.com/malibu2000/guide5.html - http://Malibu2000.com/malibu2000/guide5.html They have a shampoo and a conditioner and some other things. They also have one for Well Water. I don`t know if regular stores carry them or not but I did see them at Sally`s and at another Beauty Supply. -------------
