Hey Tangles-

This is a good question for you to answer, you're the hairlocs expert!

I do Eurolocs, which has a slighly different application and removal process, so I can't help you here, but RC Tangles does the Hairloc application and she can help!

Leigh,

Mine came out easily after heating them up with a ceramic flatiron.  I kept the iron on them while sliding them down my hair.  This is not an "official" way to remove them, but I found it very easy and it did not further damage my hair.  I had eurolocs and hairlocs for approximately 2.5 years, and I always removed them this way.

flygirl. you are right it did work using  the flat iron, but now I feel like I have lost so much of my hair. After i got them all out and shampooed and confditioned and try to comb through, the hair was coming out in clumps. Please someone tell me that it is normal... my hair feels a LOT thinner now :(

after wearing any extension for two mths, your natural shedding is locked into the shell or tube or even glue, so naturally you will have some of your own shedded hair come out- it seems like alot and when you think about it- we loose (shed) about 150 strands of our own hair PER day- so figure all the "natural" shedding was in the extension.

Also after wearing extensions for a while, we get used to having thicker hair, so once the extensions are out, yes it feels like we have no hair. i feel the same way every time i take mine out, its like oh my gosh, my hair is so thin, well it is thin! i got used to the thickness of my extensions.

dont worry a few days of no extensions and you will feel back to normal.

The Hairextensiontools site is down because their server is in Louisiana. Regular pliers would have popped open those links very easily.

gumby, you're the best judge of whether your hair is actually thinner than before Hairlocs were applied. If you feel you've lost a lot of hair, then you probably have. Yes, there's shed hair trapped inside the locs and it comes out when removed. But having considerably less hair than when you started? Sorry, but that's either from breakage or your hair was pulled out from the root.

Myself, Jenny, Luz, Marianne (from YTF) and many others who have stopped by here briefly in a panic have all lost a considerable amount of hair from this method.

Here's one of many threads about http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30029&KW=hairlocs+damage - Hairlocs damage . If you use the search button on the top right, there's quite a few experiences documented in here.

I don't agree with opening rings and pushing them back up the same hair strand that is now thinner for whatever reason, be it shedding or breakage. For one, there is no new hair being introduced into the ring to support the weight of the strand. And two, the wearer never gets the opportunity to assess their overal hair condition for many, many months.

Anyway, if your extension hair is still in decent shape, be sure to save it. :)

Leigh,

Everything that Amm and Tangles said.  Also, I had hairlocs/eurolocs for 2.5 years.  I had a lot of breakage but a lot of it was due to not maintaining it or brushing it correctly, and also ripping them apart to separate them.  My extensionist did not give me correct information.  Still, I started with a lot of hair, so I still have a lot of hair.  I had matts and dreads to work out everytime I took the extensions out, and after I washed and conditioned a few times, and lost the shedding hair, it did seem like I had a lot less hair.

FYI, I am now using Shrinkies and love them a lot more than I ever liked hairlocs. They are soft, and I believe they are a LOT easier on my hair.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum, and am planning on getting extensions put into my hair for the first time ASAP! I got an atrocious haircut about 2 1/2 wks. ago that is going to take awhile to grow out ... My idea was to get extensions to camouflage the cut (I've worn my hair up 24/7 since I got it cut) while my hair grew out.

HOWEVER ... lol ... after reading all of your posts about how damaging GL and Hairlocs were, I'm petrified! I decided against GL after a ridiculously high quote and sub-par work the woman showed in her previous client's pics and have a consult. today for Hairlocs.

What about Hairlocs, specifically, is so damaging? If I take particular care to be gentle with them, will they still damage the ends of my hair so much I will need to cut it off when they're removed? Kind of defeats the purpose, lol.

Thanks a million for any help in advance!!

the biggest problem with any extensions is the install and removal-

for hairlocs, if the stylist is not schooled or seasoned with doing extensions very long, the client can pay a price of damage to hair.

if the locs are not removed or opened carefully, then your hair can get broken.

i remover or open the locs with their tool very carefully only inserting the prongs in the open corner,  or i also

use a different tool to remove, it rounds out the loc instead of the pronge remover.

care and gentleness needs to be done with any removal, glue, shrinks what ever. Some stylist are in a hurry and can break your hair.

During the install it is important to have clean neat sections without hair from the sides being pulled in. The extension also needs to not be installed too close to the scalp, this prevents breakage too.

However, there are stylist out there that are very consiciious about how we install and remove. make sure whoever you go to, you ask to see their portfolio and ask to get references that you can see and talk to in person. There are alot of great stylist out there and alot on this board. Do your reseach like you ae doing

Good Luck
