Unfortunately, my naturally dark brown hair (which is currently colored a medium neutral brown w/ caramel hightlights) has gotten thinner, especially on the front and top.  I'm not certain why this is happening...  Anyway, my question is, in light of the fact that my hair is a bit thinner on the top and front, would it be a good idea to go blonde, as I heard that light colored hair makes thin hair less apparent than brunette tones?  I already have highlights, so, perhaps my colorist could do a very heavy highlight that would give me an overall blonde look, as opposed to removing the current color and then re-coloring, which I'm sure would be super damaging.

Any thoughts or suggestions??

I would suggest deep conditioning treatments, protein filler, using a clarifying shampoo once a week, and a hydrating shampoo and conditioner every day. This will put your hair in better shape and you should do these things before touching your hair with more chemical products. for long term care, go to the long hair board for more info on how to take better care of hair for more full and healthy hair. What shampoo and conditioner do you use currently?

Also, I think going blonde is not the best option especially if you are worried about damage to the hair. the lighter you go the most damaging. Id recommend a brown, no reds or blacks because those colors are hard to get out. How long is your hair right now? If it were me, I would dye it the color my roots are and give the hair a chance to rest. Hope this helps and good luck w/ your decision!

Thanks for your reply, Alexia!  I'm currently using the Redken "All Soft" line, which is intended for chemically processed, dry hair.  I also use their deep conditioner called "Heavy Cream" which is pretty good as well.  You mentioned that I should try a protein filler.  Do you have any particular brands to recommend?  Also, my hair is pretty long (BSL).  Maybe I should just stick with the color I have....  You're absolutely right - going blonde will probably cause some real damage to my hair.

Thanks again!

Try going to Sally's beauty supply store and just pick up a protein filler there. I forget what its called but I think it was in a pink bottle or packet. Any protein filler fron sally's should be good anyways. Good luck with your hair!
