My hair is pretty strong, so it doesn't spike well, it only curls sorta, and I want it to spike down and out. Does anybody know a good product/way to hold it in place?

Tigi BeadHead Manipulator. It is expensive (about $16) but it will spike any hair. Sometimes you can find really good deals on ebay. Try that and let me know how it works. If it doesn't (which it should) then you might have to use a texturizer on your hair firs (such as Rusk radical anti-curl). Remember to use a good smoothing shampoo and conditioner before. Redken Smooth Down shampoo and Smooth Down Butter Treat Conditioner are exellent. Also Paul Mitchell super Skinny shampoo and Conditioner work very well. Well, give it the Tigi a try and let me know how it goes.
