My girlfriend wants to change her permanent base color to a lighter brown (and add new lights) and perm her long hair to create volume next week. Apart from how long it will take, she's wondering if the processes can be done together or whether the perm should be a few days later. Any suggestions please?

You have to use a permanent color to lighten her hair, so my advice would be wait a few days in between services.  If you color first, the perm will lighten hair even more, and if you perm first color will relax curl a little bit.

I'm not sure but I thought you had to wait 2 weeks after chemical processing before you permanetely colored.

Strand test first! If you perm first or color first it doesn't matter, strand test before each application. A perm can be done 1 week after a permanent hair color. And by the way home perms or even salon perms are very damaging if not done by an expert, especially on long hair. My mother is a xpert texturizing (perming, straightening, relaxing etc) and hair color specialist and the longest hair that she will perm without biolustre is mid back. The chemical is just so harsh and when coloring is mixed in it can be horrible, just make sure that she know's that some length may be lost. BIOLUSTRE is a product that can actually repair her hair from the damage, and she wouldn't have any problem. Here's the website http://www.ilovemynewhair.com/ - http://www.ilovemynewhair.com/  it really works I promise. That product is the only reason that I have my natural midback hair platinum blonde and spiral permed at the same time. Good luck I hope it comes out great!

Been doing this for about 20 years.....If hair is ethnic, I can't make any suggestions because I honestly don't know anything about the chemicals in the products.  But on caucasion hair it is perfectly all right to do these services like I said above.  As long as the hair is in good condition prior to services and as long as you use products for her type of hair, then it will be ok....Make sure you check perm every 4 - 5 minutes to see if it is done if you have never done a perm before, and do condition afterward..You said she wanted volume...there are a lot of new products out there for body and volume only and they are great.  You wont get curl tho, just remember that.  If you decide on that route let a stylist do it since the test curl is not going to look the same as if it were a regular perm.

wait at least 2 weeks between treatments.  trust me, Ive seen MAJOR damage from people who color and perm too close together.

Personally I recommend the bleach first, then the color, as perming on top of color can make it look "off" in some places.
