I go to the salon about evry 2 weeks for blowouts
and last week i got very alarmed when i noticed
some broken hairs laying on my cape, i think that
while she roughly blew out my hair , it was breaking
right there in front of me! It suddenly dawned on me
that maybe i need to stop these blowouts and just
rollerset at hom or i'll never get to the length i want
tho i have never done this b4 ,, im dissapointed
becuz i love blowouts,, are they really this damaging
to the hair,, is the brush..??,, right now my hair is
collar bone length in the front and in the back oddly
its brastrap,, this bugs me too but idont wanna cut
anything till the front grows out......
------------- Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

I think that if its done roughly (like you stated), too hot, and too often, and with no heat protectant... then yes it will cause damage...Wetsets are the way to go or at least go back and forth like a wetset on the 2nd week and then the next 2nd week get the blowout...That should minimize the breakage/split-ends/damage. it also depends on what type of round brush you use. some of them have bristles or something that look like they'll tear your end out

Blowouts are quite damaging. For one, in order to get really good results (shiney, straight, minimal frizz) the heat myst be very high. Also, the brush is pulling at your wet hair, repeatedly. Don't get me wrong, I brush my hair regularly (while dry). But blowing wet hair with a brush (even a good one, that is round), even if done very infrequently can damage hair. Does your stylist offer wet sets? Maybe you can go to the salon for a deep conditioner / roller set every other week instead of getting blowouts.

I agree with afrolatina....roller sets are a great alternative to blow drying. If you are wanting a straighter look you can always wrap your hair after you take the rollers out and sit back under the dryer for a bit, then comb the wrap out. My mom's stylist does this on her hair and it comes out straight with lots of body.

Many of the young ladies I see getting their hair done will get a wash set and blow even after a touch-up! I think that is entirely to much heat. I get a wash & set and depending on my mood using the jumbo gray rollers if getting wrap with pins or the large purple ones if I'm going to wear my set until the curls drop then I'll wrap until next appt. and the ONLY time I will get a blow after roller setting is when I need a touch up but want to wait a bit longer before getting it and it's just the roots and only the roots to straighten helping to keep hair texture consistant

I personally love a great blowdry. When I get it done at a salon, it
comes out so smooth a silky I can't help but toss my hair over my
shoulders and swing my head around hehe. Have you thought of using a
ceramic brush instead of a wooden bristle brush? My hairdressing
teacher introduced me to metal barrel brushes instead of the wooden
ones. She said that she liked those more because it had holes in it
that let the air circulate more, hence drying your hair faster. I use a
ceramic barrel brush cuz I think those are less damaging and stuff. I
was afraid to use those brushes cuz I always thought you had to have a
lot of tension to get the hair really straight, and metal brushes never
did that for me, but when my instructor blowdried my hair it came out
soo smooth!
I just can't get those results myself though, so that's kinda sucky.
What do you guys think about this..if I get my hair blowdried twice a
week, would that be as damaging as relaxing it and straightening it at
home 3 times a week? I would be deep conditioning every shampoo and
using heat protectants..

hahahahahah I just answered my own questions..
I think I'm just going to just get the blowdries cuz I would rather
just use a little heat than chemically alter my hair any more than it
already is (damn my peroxide addiction!hehe) I think it should be OK as
long as I always use a protectant and get treatments and stuff.

aseya, use photodefreisant if you're gonna do a blowout on your hair,
it makes you hair very straight, shiny and full. I love it!
I have to blowdry at least once a week, and my hair shows no ill effects if I use this stuff. And it works very well on natural hair (and keeps my newgrowth under control).

Do you mean PHYTODÉFRISANT? I just looked
it up on the website, it looks quite good. I've heard a lot of people
talking about that stuff on teh forum, Im going to have to buy some for
myself. It also says that it has a "-Cumulative affect: the more
often you use it, the more moisturized your hair becomes." AND I think
they sell it here in the pharmacies, too! hehe I'm all excited now,
gonna have to pick up a bottle. thanks!

hi Aseya,,, i see that ur stressing about ur hair,,
im gonna re to your query about weaves and blow
drying on this page cuz my cp is slow! anyhoo i
sometimes put tracks in my hair ,, they can help u
gro ur hair out since u'll be leaving alot of ur hair
along when its weaved up but they can also damage
the hair and dont put any too near to the front, like u
said in the back is good becuz u can permanently
lose the hair on ur hairlinge from the traction,, my
mom has some issues from braids,, as for the
blouts i have stopped them and quit going to the
salon becuz ripping thru wet hair is damaging and
beyond!! wet hair is extremely vulnerable to damage
and i think thats partly why i have a gazilion weak
spots that keep bending and breaking and
thats why i cannot maintain length but its definitely
improvong since i stopped getting relaxers and
blouts,, what i do now is flat iron my hair so at least it
just one step rather than the blodrying then ironing
and all that wet hair damage,, anyway im writin too
much sigh lololol so if u wanna pm me about
anything please feel free to do that becuz i have
tested sooo many products and i have just figurd out
whats good....

For my hair blow drying with a brush is damaging. I find brushing to be damaging. I brush my hair briefly. Take this from a person that uses weaves and fusion ect. My hair is still long. I don't brush much . Brushing my hair, especially while damp takes it out. On me the damage is visible right away. I use heat protectant and flat irons. Brushing causes my hair more damage than heat.
