I have been wearing buns since high school and I have learned - mostly the hard way - better ways of doing them...  My newest "development" is for securing the ends on the donut bun (also for securing ponytails)...  If you don't want to use a scrunchie, and want something more concealed -rubber bands, of course, being the BIGGEST no-no!...

Use pantyhose! - the nice, silky kind with lycra for stretch...  Cut about a 3 inch ring from the leg part (or adjust the thickness as you like it).  Then stretch it a little so it rolls into a band... And VOILA! a *TRUE* damage-free ponytail band!

Even the so-called "ouchless" bands I have found breaks off hair pretty bad over time.  Because they are not "silky" enough, and in combination with being thin can "chop" your ends off at the securing point. And some of them, while they got rid of the metal clasp - they will still have that hard, clear glue on them...  Which to me does the same damage as the metal!

yep, I've been using my own hoisery holders for years!  they really are the best!  I can't keep up with scrunchies and the other ones and you can always make more with these.  The only thing is that if you don't get the hose with the "control legs" or "all over shapers" they will stretch out with time.

And you can dip them in oil too before you secure them and they'll keep your pony moisturized all day.

Okay, I'm hair challenged.  I want to start wearing buns as a protective style, (I'm running out of ideas and I've only been transitioning without weave for a month) but I am having some issues.

#1, I'm not getting a clear picture of how to make the pantyhoes bands?  I'm a bit slow on that one.

#2, I can't find donuts!  the ones like this; I go to BSS and the asian women look at me like I'm crazy!

#3, Do I really need a rubberband?  I have BSL hair, if I just pull my hair though the donut hole and then wrap my hair around the foam, doesn't that make for a nice bun?  Or is it neater with creating a ponytail first?

I know this his hair styling 101, but work with me please.  Up 'til now, since I was in the 4th grade, I've always went to a stylist, every week, so I never learned how to style my own hair.

The hoisery bands are really easy.  Simply cut straight across each leg-- horizontally.  You can make about 10-15 of them depending on the thickness.  The farther apart you make the cuts, the thicker/tighter the band.

You can make your own donut bun instead of buying the store foam ones.  The home made ones come out much fuller and nicer.  You can customize the size, too and make them hair friendly with a satin outer cover.  I have a how to in my hair album:  Looks like this- hope it shows

The first one is more firm and uniform. The second one  is done without the donut- plain hair (BSL).

If you want to use a holder/scrunchy to secure the pony-- do that, but no rubberbands.  Using a holder will make the bun neater and tighter.

I LOVE this tip...NoNapTique, where were you last week when I threw that pair of pantyhose away?? ARRGH!!  By the way, I have base of the neck length hair...how do you get it to stay around the donut when your hair is that short? Won't the ends stick out?

I tried a rollerset one night and it came out crappy, so I decided to put my hair up for work the next day. It was so cool on my neck and I didn't have to touch it all day... I think I'm going to start wearing my hair like that all the time!!! No pushing hair off my neck, out of my face. No more holding my hair up to let it get some air. I didn't ONCE have to brush/comb my hair back into place or go to the bathroom and wonder if it was out of place. I didn't even touch my comb or brush at ALL the entire day. I did it before work and didn't have to worry about my hair for the rest of the day, and it felt better, too!

I think I'll be doing updos all summer.

for some strange reason, my hair won't cover up the entire donut? I have BSL hair, but it may not be thick enough.  Any suggestions?  Do you think weave would help?  How can I put a track around my ponytail?
