I've had problems with dandruff and itching for years, but finally I used Nizoral, and that seemed to take care of most of it. . . until now -_- .  Recently, I started noticing a lot of flakiness again, so I started back with the Nizoral, but there was no improvement.  Instead, I now have a very stubborn scalp build-up that I don't think is dandruff.  It's hard to get off, and is likely to pull out some hairs if I try to pick it out (truly the last thing I need :-( ).  When some does come out, it's in big, slightly yellow-y flakes.  I've started putting tea tree oil on my scalp every day again, since that's supposed to take care of most scalp problems, and I've just bought some T-Sal, which is supposed to break down scalp build-up, or something.  Any further advice on what it is and how to care for it will be much appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about it- that sounds terrible. I think you should see a dermatologist. You could try exfoliating with a brown sugar scrub, but I don't know if it would help in the long run.

Sounds like yeast infecting your scalp. Head & Shoulders shampoo fight the yeast. Also it might be a good idea to get an appointment at the derm also.

I'd heard before not to use Head and Shoulders, because something about the formula actually caused dandruff rather than fighting it, to keep people dependent on it -_- .  Sounds kinda paranoid, though, so maybe I shouldn't trust that.  I guess I'll try it and just hope it helps!

I was just trying to get the most specific help possible by calling it what it is -_-; .  Ah well, I changed the topic name so I don't gross out anyone else. . . or at least not until they get in and read the post. . .

That has to be the silliest thing I've heard. I had severe dandruff and I've been using it everyday and my dandruff hasn't ever come back. I think it's better not to believe into rumors unless you have evidence.

Try adding a teaspoon of Jojoba Oil to your shampoo bottle.

Maybe it's cradle cap. Maybe rub some oil on it to soften it up and brush it out? Use cortisone-based creams and lotions. http://www.medicinenet.com/seborrhea/article.htm

I scrub my scalp with my fingernails each wash to remove skin buildup which I would otherwise get.

It sounds like you have seborrhea.  This is triggered by the presence of yeast organisms in the hair follicle, where there's sufficient oil production to promote growth.  Since Nizoral isn't working this time, the next step is a product that contains salicylic acid, then trying sulfur, and finally coal tar.

Salicylic acid products: Ionil Plus, Salac, Sal-Clens.  These reduce the presence of fungi.

Sulfur: Sebulex.  Sulfur can damage the hair shaft and should only be used as a last resort.

Coal Tar:  Ionil-T, T-Gel, Tegrin.  Coal tar slows the creation of skin cells and is an antimicrobial agent.

A few tips to remember is the longer these products stay on the hair, the better they will work.  It's good to alternate these antifungal shampoos with a regular shampoo, because they can be drying to hair.  Don't avoid shampooing, and particularly conditioning.  You'll need to condition lots because of the drying medicinal shampoos. Just make sure not to get the conditioner on the scalp.

If none of these work, then plan a trip to your doctor about prescription options.  Goodluck!

The T-sal I just started using has salicylic acid in it. . . *looks* . . . 3%.  I'll use that for a while and see what happens.
