I've always found her a little odd looking.  Don't particularly like the short (although when really long, it doesn't look quite right, either)...

She's a very "real" looking hollywood actress isn't she? She actually looks like a real person.  I think this is a good thing.

It's good if you want to appear in "real" movies (kitchen sink). Not so good if you want to make it in blockbusters!

But wouldn't that depend on what character you are playing?  The "ugly" characters are usually the ones that win the oscars!

Not sure if the uglies who play uglies win Oscars. Usually it is the beauties pretending to be uglies, that win them (genuine acting ability usually has little to do with winning an oscar--look at Hilary Swank. Now she has 2 and I'm still not convinced that she's a good actress!)

She's a very brave actress too. A few years ago she shaved her head completely for the play "Wit" (about a woman with terminal cancer) which eventually played as a 90 minute TV movie in the U.S. But when performing on London & Broadway she had to stay bald for weeks, and not many star actresses would commit to that.

True...it shows a level of commitment to the part. However, we shouldn't underestimate the "gimmick" value either. Anyway, in the end, this kind of exterior thing doesn't determine whether you're a good actor or not.
