im a 19 year old boy about to lose his mind...

ok anyways in my other topic (need a good shampoo for dry brittle hair!) i told you guys my hair was dry and brittle. well since then i have been using dove intense moisture 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner and this shampoo has done minimal changes to my hair. if a INTENSE MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER does not help your hair then i assume there is nothing out there that can. my hair is still brittle and fried for some reason, every time i dry my hair after i shower my hair looks almost exactly like this http://www.kmshayloft.com/hay-timothy.jpg - http://www.kmshayloft.com/hay-timothy.jpg . just imagine that as a human hair. its pretty messed up. do i need a volumizing shampoo or something or do i need to switch my dove shampoo? like what do i have to do?! sh*t im about to give up real soon cause nothing seems to be working for me

anyways if anyone wants to recommend me some miracle product that would be great. i am going to resume my crying the darkness of my basement!

Maybe stop using shampoo. Just use a really moisturizing conditioner, a protein treatment, and a deep conditioner. You can make deep treatments at home. One that I love and use as a leave-in is called Fox's Shea Conditioning Cream. It's shea butter, conditioner, and jojoba oil. Mix them together and use it on your hair.

You can go to a salon (yes, lots of guys go to salons so don't freak) and get a hot clay treatment done.

BTW,

what are you doing to your hair to cause this kind fo damage.  It usually does not occur merely because of 'some reason'.

1.  Do you live in a dry, arid environment?

2.  Are you blow-drying your hair at high temperatures?

3.  Are you flat ironing?

4.  Did you do something foolish like bleach your hair or use harsh coloring agents on it?

5.  Are you getting plenty of fluids, eating right, and/or taking vitamins to ensure you have new healthy hair coming in?

1. i guess i live in a dry environment but i dont think thats causing my hair to be dry cause i've been living in this type of weather condition my whole life and its never dried my hair out like this before. this is the first time its happening

2. i never blow dry my hair ever!

3. i dont iron my hair either. only my clothes

4. never put anything in my hair except hair shampoos and conditioners.

5. well i assume i eat well everyday. i take a daily vitamin to ensure i get all the necessary vitamins and minerals my body needs.

i actually noticed my hair to be very dry and hay like during the near the end of july. i was hopeing it would just be temporary and i decided to just continue with the regular shampoos i was using but its october now and its still the same so i have to take action to prevent further damage.

what is this protein treatment and deep conditiioner? can i find these atmy local pharmacy store? can you explain to me the difference between a regular hair conditioner and a deep conditioner? does it really make a big difference? and also where can i find this jojoba oil? do i use this by itself or with something else?

well thanks..

Personally I think these are the most likely explanations for your "dry brittle hair"

  • lack of clarifying rinses. Product buildup can make a person's hair seem dry and brittle but it's really the coating that causes that feeling. More information about clarifying rinses can be found http://anaissatin.freespaces.com/clarifying.html - here . Or instead of a clarifying rinse with apple cider vinegar, most people use a http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=28699&KW=clarifying+shampoo - clarifying shampoo .
  • Nutritional stuff. Hair is kind of a reflection of your overall nutrition. Brittle hair can also be a sign that you are not getting a certain vitamin or mineral. Do you take a multivitamin?

Jojoba oil can be found in health food stores. More information about jojoba oil can be found http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip175.htm - here on Karen's page  and you can find it at health food stores, or in bulk online at MystifyYourSenses.com. http://anaissatin.freespaces.com/oils.html - Here is how I use oils such as jojoba .

Through personal experience, I don't find any difference between the results of a deep conditioner vs. the regular use of a regular conditioner. The BIGGEST difference I've found in the softness of my hair was the use of a http://anaissatin.freespaces.com/whoisanaissatin.html - few different conditioners consecutively in a CCC wash . (and of course, my favorite GIOVANNI DIRECT LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER!)

Hope this helps

maybe it's due to the type of shampoos and conditioners you use....the chemicals in it may build up and cause damage to your hair....btw which shampoo do you use?

Are you 100% sure it is "natural organic"?

thanks anais...

ok well the shampoos i've been using was herbal essence, garnier fructis and now im using dove shampoo for dry damaged hair. i didnt say the shampoos were natural organic.

does anyone know if redken shampoo's work well for extreme dry hair? cause im thinking of getting it. which product should i get cause theres so many! it almost feels like im actually losing my hair and thinning it because my hair feels really thin. i dont know if this is natural feeling with dry hair but anyways

thanks everone

The Redken shampoo looks great, the Redken Condtioner may not.

Dove conditioner has silicones, which are a kind of plastic ingredient that is probably building up on your hair. I've heard that Redken AllSoft works really nicely for hair that doesn't "feel soft", but it still has a silicone.

Here are some conditioners you can try that don't have silicones, this way you can see if these silicones are the problem: Nature's Gate, Aubrey, Avalon, Beauty without Cruelty, Biolage Conditioning Balm, Giovanni, KissMyFace, Suave Naturals, White Rain Extra Body.

You could try the Redken AllSoft Conditioner anyway and see though.

well all of those shampoos you recommended probably work well but the problem is i would have trouble finding it and i already know where i can find redken products.

anyways im gonna check out my local salon and pick up some redken. im gonna try to cover up my face just in case some sees me. maybe i should wear a mask since its almost halloween anyways.

I agree with Anais, it sounds like silicone buildup.  Clarifying does wonders...I'd try a clarifying shampoo to remove the buildup and use it at least once every 2 weeks (not every wash).  I just moved somewhere with hard water, which I didn't have before, and clarifying makes a BIG difference if you have hard water.  A vinegar rinse may also help, if hard water is a culprit.

I'm sorry you are so upset Ralphy!  You've been given great advice.  I have some drugstore suggestions.  There is a great clarifying gentle shampoo called Tresemme European Deep Cleansing Shampoo.  Use this only once a week.  Also get some Neutrogena Triple silk or Triple Cream (they are both similar) conditioner and use this every day whether you shampoo that day or not.

You can condition two ways, towel dry your hair and then put the conditioner in for 20 minutes or even an hour, then rinse.   The other way is to not rinse the conditioner totally off the shaft of your hair in the shower, and that way you always have conditioner on your hair.  But make sure you do rinse it off your scalp, or you'll get the itchies.  G/L.
