In one application, do you think that would turn my hair the light brown I want it?

It prob better to use 30 vol as it equals 3 levels of lift but still deposits color, the problem with using a light  brown color on dark hair w/ 40 vol, would prob just take ur hair to that orangey stage and not deposit as much, well i'm pretty thats the case with colors darker than blonde.

I think you should go for a light brown highlift dye.

Brown highlift dyes have heavier dyeload and built in drabbers to make sure the hair doesn't turn out brassy. If you mix a normal dye with 40 vol, you'll get very litte deposit.

What is your current haircolor?

If you can't get hold of a brown highlift dye (you can get it at beauty supplies).. you can get bleach and bleach the hair to orange, then apply then use the light brown dye.

So after I bleach my hair, then I could turn it light brown?

yeah, because you'll need to prelighten the hair to make it light enough..
