Hey yall!

I'm new here and have been reading this board for about a month now.  Many of yall have inspired me to stick with growing my hair long (to my elbows).  Anyway, my hair is finally kind of getting long (two inches past bsl) and I'm finding that as it keeps grwoing, the weight of  my hair makes it lay flat on top of my head.  I have extremely thick, coarse, slightly wavy hair--which I straighten  I understand when I straighten it, I'm taking out the volume, but it is really the only way I can wear my hair.  I was wondering if any of yall knew a way I can achieve more volume more at the crown of my head without adding additional heat or damage to my hair.  Oh, I live in South Carolina so it needs to be a way that can withstand this humidity!!  If no one replies, still thank you for taking the time to read this!  I appreciate it very much.

Since you straighten it, how about using a boar bristle brush after detangling? at least brushing always used to give me more volume.

eta: although I quit brushing, so you'll have to take into account that I can't recall much about the results.

Welcome Mexia. What a lovely name!

How about this for volume....put all of your hair up into a bun on the top of your head (or the highest point you can get it to go) and leave it in for a while.  When you take it down, there should be some nice volume.  Simple, but maybe worth a try?

Anais....you quit brushing? Why? (I don't brush either, but I am just curious!)

Hi Missrini, I quit brushing because I couldn't see any benefits. Poky brushes didn't detangle my hair better than combs, and when I used the BBB, my ends tended to wear out faster.  That wasn't a fun lesson.

Unfortunately, if you want longer hair, you may have to sacrifice volume around the face.  This type of volume can be achieved with layers (which I don't recommend if you want long hair), or bangs/fringe can give the appearance of more hair at the face.  Longer hair just tends to pull flatter.  I always liked that about it, but its a personal opinion.  Another thing you might try is putting mousse or gel on the roots when its slightly damp, then put it in a bun on top of your head like said above.  Once it dries it may appear to have more volume, but I can't say how long it will stay that way, since the weight of the hair will pull it down.

- Blow dry the top roots of your hair (on a cooler setting) while holding your head upside down.

- Put your hair up in a loose ponytail on top of your hair after washing and let it dry.

Put your hair in a vicky pollard type ponytail and put some volume increasing mousse or something in before taking it down. alternatively, pick up any random mag-they always have tons of ways of increasing volume
