Hi all!

For the last week or so I have been braiding my hair at night and unraveling in the morning because I like the curls.  From reading on the forum I have learned the "technical" term would be a braid-out.  I was wondering what techniques you all use; I have read about cornrows, flat twists, two strand twists, straw sets and box twists (I apologize if I got any of those names wrong!).  I have (tried) cornrowing my hair and I really liked the results!  Tonight I am trying flat twists.  From what I gather, flat twists just consist of starting with two strands of hair and adding to it as you move on, is this correct?  Also, how does one do two strand twists, box twists and straw sets?  How do the results differ among those and flat twists and cornrows?  Does one create more of a "wave" and the other create more of a "curl"?  Is one better for the hair than the other?  I know these are a whole bunch of questions everyone, and anyone that answers I greatly appreciated it!  Oh, one more thing, does anyone know of any good websites that might have directions/pictures?  Thanks again!

When I do braid-outs I just do single braids because I can't cornrow. I get much better results when I get my mom to cornrow my hair for me though. Yes, I believe that is how you do a flat twist. I think two strand twists are just normal twists with two strands. I think box twists are when you part your hair in little boxes like when you braid your hair. I've never done a straw set but I think it's just like a roller set except using straws. I heard braids give wavier hair and twists give curlier hair. http://www.motowngirl.com/

Hello,

Box braids are just regular braids, the name comes from the parting of the hair.  2 strand twists is just that, using 2 strands of hair.  Also, in the top portion of the African American forum is a hair techinique section that has pictures, posts and links for the strawsets and various styles.

Thank you very much for your prompt replies Layla and cmesweet!  Cmesweet, I went and looked at the thread you suggested and I dutch braid on my hair last night, I haven't taken it out yet but when I do I will be sure tell everyone what type of results it created.  I plan on trying as many of the braids on this website to see which one creates the wave in my hair.

O  great! I can't wait to hear the results. I haven't done many of those braids yet but I will be in the near future.

Hi Girly,

I mostly do cornrows for my braid-outs. Some people do them straight back but I prefer to braid them a third of the way back then braid back another 1/3 and then the final 1/3 to the end if this makes sense. I put perm rod rollers on the ends and use end papers.  I like the results, I have tried braiding them in long braids all the way back but I didn't like the look.  You can go to Mowtowngirl.com she has really good instructions on braids, braid-outs, twist, twist-outs and straw and roller sets.  Hope this helps.

Yolligirl,
I think I do understand what you mean.  Last night I attempted to do flat twists and I posted pictures on my fotki.  I'll PM the password to you.
