Subject: Questions regarding ends and edges

Hello everyone.  I have what i think is a mixture between 4a/4b hair, a couple inches past shoulder length.  I am trying to attain at least BSL.  My main issues are maintaining my ends and how to deal with rapidly reverting edges.  My hair is relaxed and I go to a Dominican salon for touch-ups but do it myself otherwise while I am away from home (in college).  Please offer suggestions any suggestions for dealing with these two issues! Thanks

For ends- i would reccommend a pre-shampoo/ ends treatment- weekly or twice a week with castor oil or jamaica black castor oil- this can be done at nite and place a thin- plastic cap on your head- the day before shampooing- or if time and circumstances do not permit that you can apply castor oil to hair/scalp- particularly paying attention to the ends- apply a thin plastic cap and sit under a hooded/bonnet dryer for 15 mins prior to shampooing.

Hope this helps- works great for me.

thanks, carameldiva.  is there any product, like a light oil (in efforts to maintain my bounce & body) or something that I can use daily to help the ends?  My ends are not bad; I"m just trying to be proactive to maintain the growth that i have and avoid those dreaded trims that counteract your newgrowth.

also, does anyone know if there's a good dominican product I can put on my ends?  I use Salerm 21 as a leave in after i shampoo and condition, and I love it!

Sweet almond oil is not very light, but it is very effective in sealing spilt ends and moisturizing the ends, you'll just want to make sure that you use it sparingly! Good luck

I use either coconut oil or shea. For me both are very light and does not weigh down my hair. Also the coconut oil gives a great shine w/o being greasy/oily.

for lite oils- i would reccommend grapeseed oil or palm oil. Those are great.

i am such a pj- i use coconut oil, grapeseed oil, palm oil, apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil(pre-shampoo/ends treatment), jamaica black castor oil(pre-shampoo/ends treatment), rosemary oil(to stimulate growth).

P.S. I just ran out of evening primrose oil(moisturizing/conditioning) aand wheatgerm oil(very good). Since i have thick hair which can be dry and my hair is colored- it is a must that i oil nitely and apply a thin/plastic cap and co-wash or shampoo in the a.m.

try rosemary oil or peppermint oil or sage oil (15-20 drops) diluted in sweet almond oil and massage those areas- you can do this 2 to 3 times a week since you are relaxed or you can do it nitely.

Recently, I discovered Culture's 7 Day Relaxer. I needed something for my 7 year old twin nieces's hair so that their mother wouldn't relax it again and discovered that this really tamed my own edges, too. It's a natural product and very simple to use and quite wonderful and cheap. It's available at most ethnic beauty supply, but query Google or Yahoo with the name of the product for more info. Another great find is Lottabody' s new Tress Tranzitions Line. Their blow dry lotion is very nice. I've used both of these products together, using the Culture product first,  then Tress Tranzitions Blow Dry, which imparts a nice sheen. Also, this is made more effective by smoothing your edges with a fine tooth comb and/or light brushing, a bit of oil or grease and tying your head with a scarf. My bi-racial niece from abroad tied her hair every night while she stayed with me. She has 3a/3b hair, but her edges tend to be more unmanageable. In the morning she removed her scarf and the styled hair, usually with a flat iron. This works.

what can I do for them besides things to do immediately following a shampoo- like just for everyday, because they revert very fast, no matter what relaxer or who does my hair?

Mine are the same way...I just usually oil my hair and ends again and that usually tames my edges down

The thing is, if you use the Culture 7 Day Relaxer along with the LottaBody Tress Tranzitions Blow Dry Lotion, adding heat from the blow dryer and smoothing them down with a comb, it should tame them enough so that day-to-day grooming is a lot easier between shampoos, but you should start from a freshly washed head. Also, your hairline may be susceptible to moisture from perspiration. If you are not sleeping on a satin/silk pillowcase, buy one. Regular cotton sheets suck the moisture and oils out of your hair and make you sweat. I still recommend using a bit of the product of your choice, add a little heat from your blow dryer and tie those girls down overnight.

You might talk to the person who relaxes your hair. If you use Regular Strength, maybe they can put a bit of Super around your edges. The hair there is probably more stubborn and resistent.  But only do this if the stylist knows what they're doing. But really, give the 2 products above a try. I think they will make your edges more manageable.
