yesterday i did a strand test to my dyed dark/med. brown hair with a medium brown with gold and orange tones and the strand turned black literally. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can make my hair less porous?

Try using a neutral protein filler prior to dyeing and also use a lighter shade.  Use a demi, not a permanent color.

Rebekah, someone needs to make that info a sticky. It is one of the most commonly asked questions here, and it is the reason I came here. Protein filler, demi. Got it guys? It saved my hair. Went from bleached blonde to nice brown and 6 months later it is STILL not fading. I will be able to actually grow out my natural color without the roots! First time ever that I have dyed my hair and had the color turn out well and it stays. Usually 2 weeks later I have faded out to icky orangey-brown.

The problem with demi is that i have some grays and i would like the color not to fade at all, so i guess protein filler is my one and only option to go with

I'm not sure how the protein filler will work with the demi, let me know.

Gray does in fact fade, Miss Clairol has grey busters you could try.  It's a permanent color.  I use the Brass Busters and am happy with the results.

Is a protein filler the same as a protein treatment?  And which would you recommend?

Sally Beauty has what's called a protein filler, I don't think it's the same as a protein treatment.  I would recommend using a neutral unless you'd like to add red or gold to your hair.  I think protein fillers come in colors too.
