I'd like to grow my hair as long as tobey maguire or brandon routh in these pictures (i think there about the same length)

the trouble is the front wont grow down long enough as it keeps curling  and it gets way too thick on the back and sides. My last hair cut  was in september of this year and i havent had it cut since. heres what it looks like now:

A friend with long hair said i need to go to the hair dressers and ask them to thin it out is this true? but i need more opinions before i go to the hairdressers. what do you guys recommend? thanks. Zak
