I'm sure this has been a topic before, but I thought it would be nice to
have a discussion about the pros and cons to having long hair. Since we
have people in all different stages of growing, I think it would be
interesting to see what all you guys have to say about this. Plus, it would
be a good reference for people who are making the decision to grow/
keep their hair long

I think long hair is generally prettier and looks better on most girls.  That's just my opinion, though!

Can't wait for mine to grow long, long, long, especially as I have just heard today that I am going to be a bridesmaid at my best friends' wedding! :)  So excited!!

wow the hair in that picture looks great! wish it was mine! i also think longer hair is more feminine, although longer hair makes some people look older than they really are. When ive been sat on a bus or a train & there is a man & a woman infront both with short hair u cant tell which is the man & which is the woman. Short hair is very popular i dont understand why though because i think long hair is much better!

Cons:
Definetly the long dryingtime after washing it.
Pros:
Long hair is very feminine and beautifull. (And by this im not saying that i only like long hair on women.)
All the different hairstyles/updoes you can have.
You dont have to do anything with long hair, and it still looks great.
Also it gives me more confidence.

I agree with the above.  Long hair is more feminine and versatile. Also, my husband loves my hair long.

Pros
  • looks beautiful
  • takes less work with styling etc.
  • can do more things with it
  • makes you look special
Cons
  • takes far too long to dry
  • takes a long time to get there
  • can't damage it (i.e dye, straighteners) as the damage takes so long to grow out
  • if left down it gets tangled quickly and gets in the way

Cons:

  • Can't just change the colour whenever

  • Can look crap in winter
  • Harder to grow out a fringe(bangs)

Well all the pros and cons mentioned above...PLUS:

Pros:

  • Cheap! Don't need styling products, save on electricity from heat applicances etc.
  • Great for lazy ppl....just put hair up and go!
  • Enables you stand out from a crowd
  • Gives you extra flair when dancing

Cons:

  • You have to think about hair consequences (ie...if I do this, will it hurt my hair?). Can be a little bit stressful
  • The weight can give you headaches/neckaches.

Pros of long hair for me:

  • the different colors from tips to root and natural highlights are more visible giving hair more definition
  • The waves in my hair are more visible and pronounced
  • It is meditative and relaxing to comb it, wash it, and care for it

Pros of short hair - (I thought I'd do this instead of cons of long hair just because I've had short hair recently)

  • great for sports or outdoor activity - don't need to worry about freezing weather when skiing, or salt, or wind, or....
  • easy to wash and care for
  • can be very cute depending on the style

Pros:

  • Very versatile with unlimited styling options
  • Classic feminine look provided its in great condition
  • Can be worn up to simulate short hair
  • Only ever an hour away from any short style if you have the desire to cut it off

Cons

  • Takes enormous amount of time to wash and dry
  • Can't wash and go in ten minutes
  • Windy days
  • Takes years to grow it long in the first place!!

Its your hair, your choice and your decision

Pros:

  • Feels great on bare skin
  • Can be used as a blanket when left down
  • Hides "love handles" and other physical imperfections
  • Can be left in braids for days at a time

Cons:

  • Must be completely contained when riding top-down in a convertible (unless of course you WANT damage)
  • Takes forever to dry
  • Can't (in most cases) get a professional trim without the stylist hacking off 6 inches or more
  • One must learn to live with his/her natural hair texture, as regular curling/straightening will NOT fly

I can't WAIT to dance with waist length hair!!!

-------------

Posted By: letmecount123
Date Posted: January 01 2006 at 7:14pm

Cons:
-gets caught on bookbags/jackets of people walking past you when you are sitting in class
-again: takes forever to dry
-contrary to what most have said, I find long hair much harder to style than shorter hair
-very heavy (limits styling options, can lead to neck/headaches)
-impossible to leave down at work (I'm a stock clerk)

Pros:
-looks better
-long hair usually = attention (which could be bad I guess)
-warmer (ditto on the "blanket" thing).  Gotta love warm arms/nips/back on a cold day.
-makes a great Cousin It costume

And speaking of the long mop, I'm going to hop in the shower for a wash and deep condition.  Woot.

I agree with most of what was said here! Long hair does make me feel
more feminine. I happen to have a "boyish" figure so it helps with my
confidence. I also prefer longer hair because I think the overall look of it
is more balanced. In another discussion, Anais showed us how the Golden
Ratio can be applied to length of hair. Generally it comes out to be classic
length ( to the fingertips ) or reversed is to the waist. This is said to be
the most visually (and mathematically) appealing length to wear your hair.
Of course that is really a matter of opinion, but being very artistic, as I
am, this makes sense to me! I think classic may be a little long for my
taste, so I'm aiming for waist...

Pros:

- Feels lush and soft.

- Has a definite exotic appeal that does draw attention.

- Is sexy (on both men and women).

- Feels like silk on bare skin.

- Younger looking.

- Blanket Head: keeps your head warm in the winter.

- Helmet head: hair by itself is natural protection for your head, neck, and brain.

- Cool accessories.

- Many, many styling options that are easy to do.

- The understated elegance of a simple ponytail, thick braid, or french twist.

- Patience is rewarded - those with naturally long hair do not have to pay $500 to $4500 for extensions.  And I do not require those mostly hideous fake hair pieces you see on sale in stores and on QVC.

- Few things are as pleasurable as someone gently combing your long hair.

- The Sampson effect: this has to do with confidence that Vicky mentioned rather than strength.

Cons:

- Splits ends and wear and tear, the dry winter fuzz phase.

- Takes a long time to dry.

- Must avoid most trim-happy hair stylists  :-[

- Blanket head: hot in the summer.

- Takes great patience to grow and the ability to avoid many passing style fads.

- Long strands of shed hair can stop up your vacuum cleaner.  :-[

- The danger of being scalped (in rare circomestances, there are cases where women with very long hair have been scalped in accidents involving heavy machinery and even an amusement park ride.)  So boys and girls, if you have really long hair, be mindful of safety in your environment.

Ok now THIS one is in MY territory:

A little background- I run a roadster club, I also write about cars (and
other things) and have been published in Road & Track, BMW Magazine...
and I am well known for my ... HAIR

So... here is the deal with hair and convertibles... your new best friend- if
it isnt already- is Kiehl's Leave-In Conditioner.
http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/catalog/product.aspx?
CatCode=AXE_Hair&TopCat=F1_Conditioners&prdcode=383
(it's also a way to make instant friends with any teenagers and children
who have tangles)
I can't say enough great things about this product, would never consider
being without it. Never has there been a tangle that it couldn't instantly
release, as well as no greasy feeling.
At one of my first roadster events, there was this really cute long-haired
guy in the parking lot. We started to talk because of our obvious
common interests- cars and long hair. He said he was considering
cutting his hair- and I had heard it from a lot of women in our car group
too, they were cutting their hair because they loved their cars, loved top-
down driving and aside from looking like Yahoo Serious at the end of a
day of gratifying curve-grabbing driving, it was a safety hazard if the hair
gets in your eyes, or worse, strikes your eye hard enough to damage it.
(Men who are losing their hair often find it in their windscreens...)

But this is so unnecessary!!!

-The Kiehl's leave in conditioner rights all wrongs in a short moment for
one thing.
-I have a nice soft velvet scunchie on my gearshift, in case I suddenly
want to put it up out of the way. A quick twist at a stop light with a hair
pin or hair stix is EASY.
-My car has also acted as a big hairdryer, sometimes the style is actually
GREAT. (OK, that was just one trip through Kentucky- I dont know how it
happened but my hair looked awesome) Bangs definitely dry better in the
car!
-Not only has the hair + convertible combo scored me some dates on the
road, but also, it is how I have gotten out of some speeding tickets
-Windscreens. I have one for a bunch of reasons, but having it does help
with the hair thing in my one roadster, I dont need it in the other
roadster. (Some guys say they find their missing hair in their
windscreens... ah well.)

I should maybe tell the story of how driving my car made me blonde
sometime...

But there are a ton of tales...
Here's some pics...

70 mph (at least) hair up in french twist, held with two hair pins

At the toll booth, after a day of winter top down driving- but I will say
this- long hair + beaded seat covers is a bad thing! You find yourself
tied to your seat by fine hairs... ouch... bad... and you find out when you
try to get out of your car and are yanked back in by your head in time to
realize you just lost all those hairs... bad bad bad...

New Year's Day top down winter driving some years ago, but wearing a
"Head Sokz". These are wonderful things.

Typical summertime car hair. It was air dried messy curly to start with, or
dried messy curly on the way. It probably will be one big tangle when I
get home, but who cares? A little Kiehls, a wash and let's do it again!

Roadster Macarena

13blackbrowngold.jpg">
Shoulda used the scunchie before I started taking apart my friend's glove
compartment.

So ends today's lesson on top-down driving hair...

About the headbanging... it's BETTER to headbang with long hair, you
can whip nearby people with it!!!!

Wow, that Kiehls must be some good stuff because I couldn't imagine the tangles Jennifer's hair would have after a long ride in a convertible with the top and hair both down!  We used other leave-ins for tangles before and they do really help, but I'm not sure they could help her hair after that.  RachelZ3, don't you have a really bad time with split ends from driving with the top down all the time?  I've seen the way the ends of a flag get destroyed from whipping in the wind.  I'd think it would do the same thing to hair .... but then maybe hair doesn't whip around like I'm imagining it might in a convertible.

tdouty- exactly. If your hair is LONG, it wont fly around so much.
Actually- not to get too far off topic, the wind is really going OVER the
car, not through it, which is why we can drive through the rain and not
get wet with the top down.

The windscreen stops the air that comes back into the roosterpit, which
makes the mess in that car.

missrini- I keep trying that image, as an upload to the site and also off
my own site, trying ti again here:

although that one is more than 30k... but the one I uploaded is not

airplane... its the same word for the interior of car where the driver sits...
