Hi all!I am posting this because I'm still searching for something beautiful to wear in my hair when it is up! I am dying to know what others love to wear in their hair. Also, do you use pretty ribbon for braids, etc? So, right now I guess my favorite hair accessory is an old tortoise shell (real I'm afraid) bun holder that my mom gave me several years ago that she wore for years. I love it for the sentimental value. But I'm still on the lookout for something a little more jewelry-like (LadyFrog, I still love that beautiful hair clip you stole from your mum!)

My favourite hair accessory is probably the most usefull one as I chose them all very plain and simply black. I'd say the ficcare  I do my bun with and the little scrunchie I tie on my braids end. I used to have a very lovely black and shiny barrette that I got a lot of compliments from but my hair broke it  I got one more from the store and I broke it again. It just wasn't meant for me

MissRini: I saw that lovely updo in another post - was that the clip? Show us the beadwork when you're done. You are such a good artist, it would be great to see your handiwork on the clip. Have fun!

Sorun: So sorry you lost that beautiful barrette! I have had that same thing happen too.

my favorites are resinated hardwood hairsticks, and a hardwood hairfork.

If you're looking for something jewelrylike, have you looked at http://www.victoriasjewelrybox.com - Victoria's Jewelry Box ?

Oooooooooooooooh hard choice. I love that clip that I nicked off my mum. I love my black and silver hair sticks. And my concorde clips. And my hairagami (not really a hair prety but...).

Nope, I'm going to have to go for mum's clip. Just so pretty!

Got a new one. I got another of mum's old clips but this one's even prettier-it's kind of like a fan or a peac*cks tail shape and it's all blues and greens and pearlised bits. Hold my hair nicely too

Hey LadyFrog! When you put your hair up in your new pretty clip, can you show us a photo? Enjoy the new accessory. Thanks everyone for all the ideas. I am getting paid this week, and I'm going to buy myself something (or maybe two things!) for my hair. At last I can bun it and almost French Twist it!!!

My favorites are some titanium hairsticks from Argus Designs.
Unfortunately, they're on hiatus due to military service, so you can't buy
from them right now.

I too love the clip!  (bowing and honoring the clip)

I'm a collector of hair accessories and I don't know if I could choose any one of them as my favorite...I DO love the hair accessories....  There is this one that is called a hair pick, (which is a hair stick but with 2 metal wavy sticks instead of one).  I like it because it securely holds both a braided bun and a french twist without need for bobby pins.  The decoration is a flower design on the end with some diamondy looking rhinestones.

It depends upon my mood, but one of my favorite hair accessories was an old banana clip I have.

Before everyone groans on how 80s banana clips are, I have to defend it.  Always found it very comfortable to wear this way - less pulling than with a hair tie and I love the cascade effect a banana clip lends the hair.  Unfortunately age takes its toll and it is wearing to the point where it won't hold hair any more.  Yes, they still make and sell banana clips, but they are not the right kind.  Either the clip must be made of rigid plastic with a tight hold, or the teeth have to be that eyelet-style.  The current ones on the market are those softer plastic ones with single-prong teeth and they never hold well.

Other than that, I also like these really thick pony tail holders I found (Goody makes them).   They are thick elastic bands that make a nice pronounced pony tail.

I don't really have any favorite clips but I was wondering....I have a question that kinda goes along with this topic....My hair is really long(thigh length) and really thick and I have a hard time finding hair styles that will work....braids, of course and then the good old pony tail! but, I can't really do the french twist and whenever I use hair sticks or other items like that, they don't really work. Does anyone know of any hair items that work really good on long, thick hair? Let me know!

How are you using the sticks?  There is probably a way to do it that makes it work, tell us what you've tried and we can offer other suggestions.

welcome, horselover!  Wow, your hair sounds kinda long

Lady Godiva (among others) have had great success with a "log roll" secured by a XL ficcare clip.  (Lady G, you out there?)

I'm here, thanks for the nudge, Dave. Hi to horselover, too (from one who "rode a horse," heh heh).

My hair is floor length and thick.  I wear log rolls as my most basic hair style and affix them either with a Ficcare Maximus (Large - they don't come in XL, darn it) or a large leather slide/wood pin tool.

Making log rolls is not hard, and they super fast, once you get the hang of it.  Start with a ponytail at the nape, though not tied off with an elastic hair band.  I simply twist my hair against itself, working just over my left shoulder with my left hand. See my demonstration photos from almost 7 years ago http://www.tlhs.org/carstyl.html - here at TLHS, and you can see that my left hand holds the hair, which is folded, really just twisted against itself.  Then I lift this mostly upward, and with my right hand, take the remaining length and wrap it around/around/around the twisted portion until it's used up. Wrap the hair in an upward direction so the ends are near the top of the twisted part.  Then simply press the roll against the back of your head and use the Maximas or leather slide/wood pin to fix it right there, catching some scalp hair, of course.  This takes me about 30 seconds to do.

Another useful style is the alternate version of a Figure 8 bun, which is called an Infinity bun. This requires just one hair stick, and I assure you that it works.  How I make it is, again, I start with my hair twisted a bit at the nape, except I twist it as a rope, not bending it against itself. I make two typical bun coils, with the second coil directly on top of the first, not going around it (larger/wider - no). I take the top coil and flip it over sideways, and work the two coils into a proper infinity symbol. Then with my left hand (thumb in left loop and index finger in the right loop), I pull it slightly from my scalp, which leaves a little space between the infinity symbol and my scalp hair. Of course it's connected at the center X, which is what I work with next. I  simply wrap the rest of my hair's length around the X like a regular bun, going around/around/around, flat against my head. Finally, I use a sturdy wood hair stick and stick it into the right loop, underneath/thru while grabbing scalp hair, and then it emerges thru the left loop. If you place it low enough at the nape, this style should last all day. Basically, you're making a leather slide-type barrette out of your own hair to hold the rest of your hair up. It takes me about 2 minutes to do this style.

Best of luck!

Well that worked!  Thanks Lady Godiva, I finally got a good infinity bun! I read some other instructions for the infinity bun on another site and they said to do your 2nd coil bees butt bun style under the first, and that did not work at all.  This looks much better!

If you want normal stuff like hair sticks etc. go to Clares. That's where I get mine from. If you want pretties, you're probably best of looking in craft fairs etc.

Go to Clares and  Accesorize etc first though as they have lots of toys.

I'm glad for you! I prefer the look better, too. Most Figure 8s and Infinity Buns look odd to me, usually like a stretched-out, flattened Bee Butt Buns, because most people make the 8/infinity symbol as the final step, pulling it out of a bun. I do the opposite, making the symbol first, then wrapping behind it.

There are some photos (now nearly 7 years old) at TLHS, specifically http://www.tlhs.org/carstyl.html - here and http://www.tlhs.org/l_hair93.jpg - here . Sorry there's nothing recent that can be found publicly. http://www.bluedragonphoto.com/portfolio.html - This is almost as old (top center photo under "Follicles", the Spider Woman). I have been growing my hair for 18 years.

Best!
