          | I just wanted some feedback from you guys.  For a month and 1/2 now I have been putting reconstructors and deep conditioners in my hair.  I also moisturize on a daily basis.  Yet I STILL have breakage.  Not as much as before but my hair still sheds and breaks.  How much breakage is normal/healthy?  What else can I do to minimize breakage and shedding? |

          | Sounds to me like you need to do a protein treatment asap and then monthly from then on. I use Jherri Rhedding 100% natural protein conditioner. You can purchase it at sally's beauty supply. Also you can use Garlic shampoo to help with shedding. I use Queen Helene Garlic Shampoo and Nutrine garlic shampoo. After using a protein conditioner- make sure you follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. Hope this helps. |

          | I'm having the same problem and am trying to figure out what it is.  I think it's possible to overcondition.  It's best to use a reconstructor only once a month and a light conditioner the rest of the time. I was washing my hair once a week but recently increased it to twice a week as I started using a spritz of essential oils, which my hair loves but its more greasy now. I'm not sure if my hair likes the extra washing.  My hair gets dry very easily.  I think I will have to make another batch of spritz that is lighter to get away with stretching the washes. Are you wearing protective styles?  Braiding your hair every night if long?     R2D2inoz |

          | Thanks for the responses: I have not put direct heat in my hair for 6 weeks.
I have been doing a reconstructor followed by a deep
 conditioner every 2 weeks.
I usually wash every 2 weeks because I am afraid that
over washing will damage/dry out my hair.
I have been using products recommended on this site like
 Emergencee and Redken Deep Fuel.
I twist my hair at night in loose flat twists so it comes
out wavy the next day. i usually wear my hair that way or in a
 bun.
 Any other suggestions?

          | Okay, its normal to lose 50-100 strands of hair a day.  If its breaking, you do need to do a protein treatment and maybe a hot oil treatment.  Your routine sounds like youre treating your hair just fine, so just try a treatment |

          | Your routine sounds fine but it just takes time so keep doing what you're doing.  It sounds like your hair was damaged before and it just needs to be grown out and gradually cut off, that is if you don't want to cut it off all at once.  Do you have split ends or anything?  Make sure you are trimming regularly so you can get rid of the damaged breaking hair.  Since you have started a new and better regimine your new growth should come in more healthy.  You may want to try some castor oil for your ends to help with breakage.  Just put a little on the ends and braid, twist or put in a bun at night.  Also, don't overdue it with the protein because it could cause more breakage.  Monthly protein treatments should be enough and try to deep condition weekly.

          | Thanks for the responses...Should I really cut back and do reconstuctors only monthly?  Also I was wondering if any of you twist your hair after washing.  I've been semi-drying my hair and then flat twisting so that it is wavy.  Does that cause damage?  If anyone twists their hair do you only do this when dry.  and how often do you retwist to keep the style up? |

          | I agree with Pokahontas... it seems like the hair that is breaking was damaged prior to 6 weeks ago.  Sometimes it takes time for broken strands to completely break off from the healthier strands.   I don't see anything wrong with flat twisting to make it wavey. If this is the style you usually use, without combing then you might be losing hair that wanted to shed and didn't have the chance too.   I would say twist your hair while damp + a moisturizer, if you want to get the best waves.  You may have to experiement how often to retwist to acheive the wave look you are going for. Some people only retwist once a week and then allow the waves to wear off.  So it really depends on your desire and what is best for you.

I personally wouldn't do protein treatments over twice a month....you should be safe with that if you feel like you need to do it more than monthly.  Twisting is a good, healthy hair option.  It's very gentle on your hair and will not cause damage.  Cmesweet has good advice on twisting.  When I do braid outs I do them wet, but I never have good results from them so i don't do it often.

I guess everyones hair is different but i use a
reconstructor on a weekly basis but i do shampoo it
out with NTM shampoo( a mild moisturizing
shampoo),, i use either Emergencee, Deep Fuel or
K-pak,, alternating and my hair is defintely healthier
and stronger than b4 and i notice wayy less bad
ends ,, i also deep con after every protein, i feel that if
i dont reconstruct ever week i have more breakage
and my hair seems over soft so for me the protein is
good,, i dont know whether thats just my weird hair

I did protein treatments a lot more when I was transitioning (probably every 2 weeks) but when I became fully natural I found that i needed them less.  If your hair is thriving from weekly protein treatments than keep doing it because everyone's hair is different. Some hair really likes protein and some dosen't.  You may find that you will need to do them less once all your chemically treated hair is gone.
