Here's a link with really good pictures showing them being applied. I only had 5 pieces in total. Back:1 8" piece with 4 clips and 4 rows sewn together. 1 6" piece with 3 clips and 2 rows. 1 4 1/2" piece with 2 clips and 2 rows sides: 2 3 1/2" piece with 2 clips and 2 rows.( one for each side) When I blow my hair out straight it isn't very thick so I didn't need as many pieces in as the average person. But when I do make them for others I like to make 2 of the 6" ones. Gerri, thank you! I love your hair!!  My hair is quite thick, but I'm going to get it rethinned out soon. I swear I have enough hair for 3 people, haha!
