The age old debate of how often to wash one's hair.....I'm a runner and I work-out 5 days a week, sometimes 6 when I am training for an event. After working up a sweat, I usually want to wash the perspiration out of my locks. As a result, I end up washing my hair almost daily. Is this bad? I recently read that even those who work up a sweat on a daily basis should avoid shampooing daily and just rinse the hair and add conditioner to the ends every other day (shampoo on off days). Does this make sense?

Washing your hair every day is fine.  There are plenty of milder shampoos around for frequent use, but other than a clarifying shampoo, you should be okay with almost any one.  Heat-styling, on the other hand, isn't fine every day, so be sure to let your hair dry naturally at least half of the time!  Good luck with your racing...what distances do you run?

Thanks, TW.

My main concern is that I have color-treated hair, so I am afraid that daily washing will also lead to quicker color loss. On days that I don't run, I have been donning the shower cap.

I compete in triathlons, and long-distance running events. I have a 1/2 marathon at the end of March that I run each year with my Mom. I'm very slow, but I enjoy it!

Sounds fun, oh, and I'm sure there are heaps of people slower than you.  Good luck on the half-marathon.

I think the daily washing could well lead to slightly faster colour loss, but if you're using a gentle shampoo you should be okay.  Maybe a colour deposit shampoo like Sheer Blonde / Brilliant Brunette etc. could be helpful here?
