Hi -

I'm a 14 year old teen girl trying to figure out what a fair budget would be
for hair care and hair cuts. How much do you spend for:
- haircut/styling
- hair coloring
- hair products, shampoos, etc

So, if thats how much you spend, how often do you spend it? (How often
do you get it cut, or colored, or how much do you spend a month, about?)

If you color your hair, do you get it done at a salon, or do you do it at
home? How much does it cost?

Thanks for any opinion!!!!

Cuts/styling- I spend $0 for cuts (trim my own hair) but spending $6-12 every eight weeks is a pretty fair price.

hair coloring - I don't advise coloring at all, because it can be more trouble than it's worth. Coloring requires more visits for root touchups, disasters, and other color-related issues. In short, coloring can become a very expensive habit that is not easy to fix.

hair products- the average shampoo would last about 3 months. The average conditioner lasts about 2 months. It's like buying hot dogs and buns in different quantities. The average price for an average-sized shampoo or conditioner is $3-5 for a drugstore brand and $8-10 for a salon brand.

A conditioner's brand is more important than a shampoo's brand - if you can buy a drugstore brand of shampoo that has similar ingredients as a salon brand, that's a great setup. Here is the http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30010&PN=1 - product selection guide , especially the shampoo guide (see middle of first post).

Hope this helps

Products------Shampoo/Conditioner...I use Fruit Garnier...and they have products up the butt for different hair-types...It's usually 3.99 for Shampoo and 3.99 for Conditioner...it lasts me about 2 months, and I wash my hair around every four-five days...Styling products are also 3.99...Although I use the 1.99 gel on my hair...It works pretty good...gel is gel.

Haircuts----I pay 10-16 dollars...but I try to cut my hair as least often as I possibly can...Every two-three months...

I straighten my own hair...My hair is crazily curly/frizzy...I need like 1/4 bottle of gel to tame it...So if I want volume...I blow it out really quick...like 15 minutes just so that it's dry...(Get a cheap 15 dollar blow-dryer)...

I invested in a REALLY good iron...I got the Sedu ($120) because supposedly it was "top of the line"...but I've tried the Chi the other day...and it works even better (I know, I'm pissed)...You can get it for like 60 dollars on E-bay...Whatever iron you get...just make sure it's a REALLY REALLY good one...research which is best for your hair, cause it's REALLY worth it.  I straighten my hair in like 35 minutes.

If I don't want volume, just straight/flat hair...I just iron it...

Haircoloring----

It depends what you want...

If you just want haircolor...Just do it at home...Buy Revlon 3.99 tints...It has no Ammonia...If you have a lot of hair...buy two tints.  It works just as good as any other tint.

If you want highlights...Get that done at the salon...Some people charge like 75...I got mine for 45...Just look around.

If you want both economically...just dye your hair at home, and get highlights at the salon...Or get highlights...and THEN dye it.

This is fun if you have darkish hair, and want to go lighter.

Get dramatic highlights....then dye your a color darker than your highlights, but lighter than your hair, so your highlights blend...as it washes out you're highlights will show more...(I had dark hair...got highlights--they were orange-ish, but I dyed it a dark ash blonde...and got light brown hair with blonde-ish highlights)

THEN...When you have roots...Dye it the same color you dyed it...And do that until you feel it's time to redo highlights...(like three months later)...(So I would dye it dark ash blonde again)

Get you're highlights re-done...You can either chose to only do them on top of your hair/on top of your hair...the same color you had them before/lighter...in different sizes...whatever you want.  Then dye your hair again...a color lighter than your base, but a LITTLE darker than your highlights...to blend...(Or if you got subtle highlights...you don't have to)  If you get your highlights dramatically lighter...you can make your hair lighter. (On my hair...I want to get really light blonde highlights, and then dye it like...medium ash blonde)

And then eventually when you feel you're too light...just do the opposite process...get lowlights instead of highlights...and dye your hair a little bit darker.
